How do you estimate a UF calculated GPA for an IB student who has made mostly all A’s and a couple of B’s her entire high school. I think her UW gpa is 3.95 and weighted is 5.25
UF only looks at academic classes and gives a .5 bump for honors and 1.0 bump for AP/DE. UF only counts academic classes (math, science, social studies, English and foreign language and APs). Art, band, newspaper, yearbook or office aide don’t count. All AP classes count! So honors photography doesn’t count but AP Photography does. DE and AICE (I think but don’t know much about this) count. A very general but not always perfect guesstimate is halfway between your high school weighted and unweighted GPAs.
UF’s mid-range for recalculated GPAs last year was 4.2 - 4.6, for example.
I made a spreadsheet for my kids because you either “do the math” and figure it out accurately or make a guess. I first heard the halfway guesstimate from a UF admissions staffer.
Thanks for the info. I figured only academic classes would be calculated in. So my daughter is IB … does she get the same points as the AP or more?
I’m not certain about IB. Such classes may be weighed like AP but I don’t know for sure. It is definitely not “more.” The most a kid can get for an “A” is 5 points when recalculating for UF. If a kid’s recalculated GPA for UF is above 5, then they are doing it wrong. @Gator88NE might know about IB…
@GatorDad305 It’s the same with IB as it is with AP – they are both weighted the same.
IB, AICE, and Duel Enrollment are weighted like AP, +1.0 points. “Honor” classes (and pre-IB and pre-AICE) are worth and additional +0.5.
An IB student (assuming they are completing the IB diploma) with a 3.95 GPA is going to be in the top 25% of accepted students for GPA. The same with AICE. With AP and DE classes, it’s a question of how many AP/DE classes, but a “heavy” load of AP/DE would also put a UW 3.95 GPA into the top 25% range.
In words, her GPA (and class rigor) is great, it’s more of a question of her EC’s and to a bit lesser degree, ACT/SAT test scores. (and that Essay…that darn essay counts…).
