Chances at umich or msu?

It's been a dream of mine to go to umich. I have to apply this November and I'm getting a little nervous. I don't have a great GPA. Actually, I have a pretty lousy GPA. But I have always taken the most difficult classes offered to me, and participated in a few activities. 9th grade was what really messed me up, because I didn't really care about my grades back then. Here is what I've taken:

9th grade: Honors Biology, Accelerated Geometry, Spanish I, Global history, English 9, and health/gym (required).

10th grade: AP US History, Accelerated Algebra 2, Spanish II, Honors English, Honors Chemistry, and Nutrition.

11th grade: AP English Language, AP Biology, AP Psychology, Spanish III, Human Anatomy, and Pre-Calculus

12th grade (this is what I plan to take): AP Calculus a/b, AP English Literature, AP Physics, AP Chemistry, Spanish IIII, and Government/Economics (required)

I'm in 11th grade, and have a cumulative GPA of 3.111. This past semester I recieved a 3.6 GPA, but my cumulative is still pretty low.
Activity wise... I was on freshmen cheerleading in 9th grade, and then varsity cheerleading for 10th and half of 11th grade. I was also on freshmen tennis in 9th grade, and track in 10th grade. I participated in Be The Change (a club against bullying) in 10th grade.
I did take the ACT in September 2011, but I had no idea what it was like and recieved a 24. Since then I've taken an ACT prep course and took it again a couple weeks ago. I don't know my score yet but it was much better, I know I got at least a 26-28.
I do live in Michigan... I've heard that makes a little bit of a difference.
I also know my counselor very, very well. So I will definitely recieve an excellent reccomendation from her. I also have a good relationship with my AP Biology teacher and plan on asking her for a reccomendation.
Do I have any possible chance of getting in? I want to study Biochemistry. I know that I have a pretty lousy GPA, but I've taken the most difficult courses offered at my school. What do you think?

Honestly I don’t think you have a chance at umich - you might as well apply because you never know, but your GPA is just too low and your ACT is below average for Michigan. If you really are set on going to Michigan, I’d advise you to go to a community college/lower tiered university for your first year or 2, get a good GPA then transfer to umich later.

Michigan state - you definitely have a better chance at getting in, although your GPA is still substantially lower than average (3.6 is MSU’s average). Your 24 ACT is average for MSU but if you can improve it to 26-28+ you definitely improve your chances of getting in. Most likely you will be deferred for admission at MSU but then if you get good grades your 7th semester you could be a likely admit. Make sure to apply early (september or october) to improve your chances on getting in.

Make sure you do your best to get really good grades this semester, and good luck with everything!
