Chances at UPenn, Columbia and Stanford.

Hello everyone! So my little brother is applying to schools and I would like your opinion on his chances on getting into the 3 schools that I mentioned (as well as other reaches such as GU, USC, and Berkeley). He will be applying as an international student, and he goes to an international school in Asia. So here are some of his stats:

GPA: 3.6 UW. He is currently in the IB program taking 3 HL and SL courses. HL courses are Business, Economics and English. The SL courses are Math, Physics and Spanish. He currently has a predicted mark of 37 (predicted of 6 in all courses except HL Econ, where his predicted is 7, no prediction for the so called bonus but he feels like he can get at least 1 point for sure, and most likely 2).

SAT 1: He took it once already in January and only scored 1860, he will retake it again (has been preparing).

SAT 2: Took Math 2 and Physics, 750 or something like that in Math 2 and 720ish in Physics.

EC's: 3 years of MUN (and external conferences). JV and Varsity soccer (2 years), Varsity track (2 years), Varsity golf , Class Council, 200 service hours, Jazz Band (alto sax). Also has participated in the school band competition for the past 3 years, and has won first place (his band) in one of the years, he is an electric guitar player. Also is in the school's sports council, photography club, investment club, and a few other clubs. Has also organized/helped out with a UNESCO event.

Languages: He is fluent in Uzbek, Russian and English. Has also been taking Spanish for the past 5 years. We are from Uzbekistan (former USSR country).

Rec's: Two great rec's. One from a teacher who he has had for 3 years, and knows him well, and another whom he has only had for a year, but that teacher apparently thinks that my brother is one of the top econ students.

Anyway, hope this information helps, and I would greatly appreciate some input on his chances given his current stats.

It is very hard to chance him because he is an international student… If he was an American student, he wouldn’t even be applying to schools like UPenn, Stanford and Columbia with a 1800 SAT score ( these schools easily reject Americans with 2400s every year). But i have heard international students have lower SAT scores…
All the schools would be high reaches for him except maybe USC which would be a middle reach but it depends how each school views international applicants. Good luck!!!

Thank you for your reply! I would assume international students would have lower scores due to English being a foreign language to them, and therefore the reading and writing sections of the SAT would be harder for them (theoretically) and adcom would take that into account. However, this is just a guess on my part.

Does anyone else have any input? Assuming that his SAT 1 score goes up to 2000+ (he is doing Baron’s practice test’s now and is getting 2100, so I am guessing he could get 2k in the actual thing).

How would being from a country that is really not too represented in American higher education help him? If at all, the same thing goes to being fluent in 3 languages and having a decent grasp of a 4th.

Thank you again for all your help!
