Please Chance My Brother, I will Chance Back

Hello everyone. Can you please tell me what you think my little brothers chances are in getting into the following schools?

Universities: Columbia, Georgetown, USC, Emory, Vanderbilt
Intended Major: Economics or Business

Current High School: International School (private), top in the country
Gender: Male
Nationality: From Central Asia (one of the ex USSR countries)
Languages: Fluent in 3 (including Russian and English), has taken 6 years of Spanish
GPA: UW3.7, weighted, not sure, but I know the maximum one can get with 3SL and 3HL is 4.25 for weighted. Essentially add a .5 for each HL course.
Program: IB Program, HL: English, Economics, Business. SL: Math, Physics, Spanish
Predicted IB Score: 39/40 (including bonus marks)
SAT1: 1940
SAT2: Math2 760, Physics 710
Legacy: Not sure, father went to Columbia and Georgetown for Graduate school, and I myself am a Georgetown graduate student right now.

EC's:
Model United Nations (MUN) - 3 Years, various conferences
JV Soccer - 2 years
Varsity Track - 2 years
Varsity Golf - 2 years
Jazz Band, Symphonic Band, etc - 4 years, Sax Player
Annual School Charity Band Competition - participated all 4 years, winner once, finalist once. Furthermore, for 2 years was on the committee that helped organize the competition. Raises around $10k per year for charity if I am not mistaken.
UNESCO Club - 2 years I believe, executive on the club. Responsible for creating a training program aimed at teaching IT to school children.
Investment/Photo/Other clubs - 4 years, executive in 2 of them
Volunteered in various projects and charities in the country, has around 200 volunteer hours.
School Sports Council, one of the leaders in the organization - 3 years
Class Council - 1 Year
Two short summer internships

Recommendations: Excellent rec's from two of his teachers, as well as his counselor.

Anyway, what do you guys think? especially given that he has a low SAT1 score, but is from a country that is greatly under represented in the US and US universities.

Columbia: Low Reach
Georgetown: Low Reach
USC: High Match
Emory: Low Match
Vanderbilt: High Match

Chance me back!: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1574625-chances-brown-wash-u-st-louis-will-chance-back.html#post16553665</a></p>

His low SAT I score will definitely be a hindrance - but it actually depends. Can you break it down a bit? The writing section on the SAT is looked at much less than the critical reading + math sections.

Is he applying as an International student or does he have American citizenship?

Honestly, it seems like a Low Reach for Columbia and Georgetown - his scores are simply too low for int’l students.

The rest I would put as matches, with Vanderbilt being maybe a Safety.

Yeah his SAT1 is low. GPA could be higher but from my experience attending that same HS they are fairly harsh graders. Generally only 3 people get 3.9-4 GPA (UW), and like i said Weighted GPA max is 4.25 (technically 4.5 if someone takes all higher levels, but nobody does that). No weighting in grade 9 and 10.

Anyway, for his sat math was 700 and cr was 640. Would being from one of these countries (Kazakhstan/Uzbekistan/Kyrgyzstan) mitigate somehow the lower SAT? Same goea for speaking 3-4 languages. Furthermore would the SAT2 scores mitigate that a bit or is the focus with undergrad admissions mainly on SAT1?

Thank you for your responses.

Anyone else have anymore input on this?

Thank you!

I think USC, Emory and Vandy are all matches. Columbia could be a little reach as well as Georgetown. Definitely a good shot at all the schools though. Good luck! Get me back please.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1574931-chance-me-osu-please-will-chance-back.html</a></p>

Columbia: High Reach
Georgetown: Reach
USC: High Match
Emory: Match
Vanderbilt: High Match

Chance back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1574644-please-chance-my-ed-ea-will-chance-back.html</a></p>

That SAT score is offset by the fact he’s a legacy at Columbia and Georgetown.
USC and Vanderbilt are low reaches and Emory is a match.
This is assuming he won’t be applying for financial aid.
Which other schools is he applying to? I don’t see any safety on that list and an applicant should always have two safeties.

Columbia: REach
GTown: Reach
Vandy: Reach
Emory: Low Reach
USC: High Match-Low Reach

All of these schools are low reached and high matches
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1569738-chances-i-chance-back.html</a></p>

Yeah he is not applying for FA. His safety schools Canadian schools and 2 UCs. I believe UofT, UBC, McGill and Queens in Canada are the safeties/target. Not sure what the UC safeties are.

Thank you!
