I might as well add my SAT IIs.
Math (Higher Level): 600
Chemistry: 500

Chemistry was SO hard and I plan to retake them both again and in addition to taking the English one. However, at USC the SAT IIs are optional.

Oh wow...retake all your tests. If you improve 100 points on each test I'd say you are in. As for now..reach.

How much does my internship help? I mean I thought that having an internship that was VERY hard to get for this summer would help like crazy! It's exactly what I want to do when I grow up, so it's working towards my major.

bump... please help?!

one more bump

Here's a quick suggestion:

Go to the SAT prep section, and read the thread at the top (it's posted so it won't ever move) by xiggi on preparing for taking the SAT/ACT stuff.

He makes some excellent suggestions. Also, if you do want to take the "testmasters" course--it is only offered in about three states--make sure you go to the www.testmasters180.com link, not the regular www.testmasters.com link--which is not as good a course (it's run by people who are trying to make money off the other company's name).

Xiggi gives some excellent suggestions on how to go about studying--but his thread has about 90 pages to go through to get to it--so go read the last 20 pages only--which gives a link to a summary site where the key points are covered much more quickly (in about 3 pages or so).

Good luck.

P.S. I see that USC just posted this on their main undergraduate admisssions site:

SAT I Score of Freshman Class
Average combined: 1350
Middle 50%: 1280-1420

If you will notice, this is slightly higher than what I originally suggested you needed in post #2 (I suggested 1200-1350)--but apparently you will need closer to 1240-1350 to get in Also, notice (as I said there), that they aren't too interested in the writing score on the SAT.

If those are your UW gpa's, then what are your Weighted gpa's. If you have many AP classes then you stand a much better chance and your gpa would stand out more as well. But if that happens to be your Weighted gpa as well (i.e. no AP classes), then I would presume it is a slight reach.

I understand you live out of state? But if you're interetested in California, why not apply for public schools? You have a better chance getting into UCSD and UCI, in my opinion.

you don't have amazing ECs

otherwise, go retake the SAT

Thanks for the help. The GPA incudes all Honors classes but no APs (I wanted to take AP Language and AP Chemistry junior year) because I came to my new school in Florida too late so there was no way I would be able to register for the class and I also missed summer assignments.

This year (for senior year) I'm taking 3 APs (AP Lit, AP Calc, and AP Econ/Gov't).

I also believe that the internship that I got is an amazing accomplishment. Over 80 people (who were specifically nominated by their school.. ~4 people per school) applied all over central florida and 9 people got the job after final interviews. The internship is 5 weeks at the Orlando Senintel newspaper. I will be sports writing (and even interviewing) for the Orlando Magic, Tampa Bay Bucs, and more.

I also started a club, raised $1,000 for it, and went to a leadership conference in Utah by myself for one week during July 2006 for the club.

And... 3 years starting on Varisty lacrosse (will play for my 4th year during senior year). The first two years in CA my team was top 10 in Northern California, and this year the team in Florida that I played for was #4 in Florida.

Do tell me how these aren't great accomplishments?

In addition to all those honors societies, I have ~300 hours of Community Serivce.

look around the CC board and you'll see that in comparison your accomplishments are not as amazing as you think they are. people have raised $15000 for charity, published books, and played and captain-ed multiple sports

firefox is right.
I have many friends who have top leadership positions such as governor of Key club: leader of multiple states' high school Key clubs.
Varsity sports is nice, but to be honest, your team doesn't seem to be the BEST of the best. For instance, my school's girls tennis has gotten CIF champs for 2 or 3 years straight. One girl was first place varsity in her freshman year. Full ride to USC, among others. I have 3 years of varsity golf, we went to CIF, but in all honesty I'm really mediocre. My point is that sports, unless accompanied by outstanding achievements and results, isn't all that great. Good yes, great no.
Internship: my school has a Tech program that required everyone in the program to have an internship. I'm doing research with a project at Cal State, definitely going to publish a paper.
I'm also doing a summer job at a computer company, which happens to be the area I'm going to go in, just as you are for yours.
What you should do is up your test scores a decent amount and accentuate your strengths, simply because it's probably too late to actually DO anything major.
Put your all into your internship and learn all you can from there. Then explain the experience you gained from there in detail. Hopefully, the adcom will see that you are actively pursuing the fields that interest you, and that's what matters.

Best of luck, chance me? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=361690

Thanks for the help.

Any other help?

The journalism school at USC - aka Annenberg - is incredibly hard to get into. If you look at the USC rejections threads for the Class of 2011, you'll see that tons of people with near perfect stats got rejected. A lot of people underestimated how hard it was to get in this year. So for sure get those scores up. good luck!

I think you have a fair chance at USC as long as your test scores are raised. Internship is always a good thing though you may want it to be a tad bit longer. What did you accomplish in the internship? You may also want to put in some extra effort into your essay and make sure to choose wisely for your recs. Good luck! :)

THANK YOU FOR THE ADVISE!! Do you guys know of any other journalism schools in California (or on the west coast) that I could get into?

bump.......

USC= definite reach because of your scores

meh. yeah i know.

If I get my ACT up to a 27.. what are my chances?
