Chances at USC or UC Santa Barbara?

Hi all! I am a rising senior and would like to know my chances for my top two schools USC and UC Santa Barbara. Also this is my first cc post so sorry for any errors and such.

Junior year
First Semester

Italian 3 Honors: B+
AP Language & Comp: B+
Algebra 2: A-
US History: A-
Chemistry: A-
Chorale: A
GPA: 3.62 UW and 3.96 W
Second semester will most likely look about the same

Senior Course load:
AP Lit
AP Gov
APES (I tried taking AP Bio but my school canceled the class due to low enrollment)
Pre-Calc
Chorale

Extracurriculars:
Chorale/Chorus (basically its like the school choir but its a class): 4 years
Book Club: 4 years
Club Volleyball: 4 years
California Scholarship Federation (CSF): 4 years
Worked at an animal shelter: 3 years
I received the presidential gold award for service 2 years in a row (sophomore and junior)
Interact Club: 2 years
A Capella: 2 years
Lifeguard/Swim Instructor: 2 summers
CSF Treasurer for junior year
Most likely CSF Secretary for senior year
Theater: 1 year
JV Diving: 1 year (received most improved award)
Also this summer I will be attending the Medical Institute at Georgetown which is like a week long program where aspiring medical students learn medical school curriculum such as cardiovascular physiology and pathology, microbiology, infectious diseases, and we also get to work with cadavers. (sorry for the rant but I am really excited bout it!)

UC GPA: 3.83
Unweighted Cumulative GPA 9th-11th: 3.6
ACT: 27-28
I am a hispanic female who is also first generation college student

I know that my GPA and ACT are lower than the averages for both schools but I am hoping that my extracurriculars, racial background, and first gen status will give me an edge. I go to a private all-girls Catholic high school that is well known for amazing academics and athletics. Also I wrote my essay on how coming from a bad city has influenced me to continue my education and all that good stuff and how my involvement in the music program at school has helped me grow as a person.

Chance me for USC and UC Santa Barbara please! I can chance back.
Any comments/feedback are greatly appreciated!

I forgot to add my major is undeclared but leaning towards Sociology/Linguistics on a Pre-med track

Well, racial status won’t change anything with UCSB, as the UCs don’t use affirmative action. I don’t know if USC uses it or not.

Your essays sound fairly strong, and you have some really excellent ECs (also, wonderful to see another diver on here).

Going by stats alone, I’d say they’re low reaches or very high matches.

@CultClassic thank you for the reply! I know that USC does use affirmative action so maybe that should help some. It is always nice to see a fellow diver!

UCSB match
USC low reach

Being a URM may help you in admissions. Your schedule looks challenging which is something colleges love to see. Your ECs are solid, and they show commitment. Being in-state will also help for SB. Good luck!

I don’t know much about UCSB, but I know it isn’t quite as competitive as UCLA or UCB, so I would say you seem like a high match at worst, a match at best based on your ECs. USC seems like a low reach based on your relatively low ACT, even with your impressive ECs.

UCSB: match, high match.
USC: Midreach.

UCSB: match
USC: high match/low reach

Thanks.

Ucsb: match
USC: low reach

I would consider them matches and low reaches like the rest of them. I think your extracurriculars are phenomenal and that your ACT score could use some improvement but I think that you a really good chance!

I don’t know much about UCs, so take whatever I say with a grain of salt. Overall, I would say that your essay topic has potential to create a phenomenal essay, and your ECs are just wonderful! I think you have good chances at both schools because you seem to be very well rounded, yet have ECs that relate to what you are thinking about doing. Best of luck!

You are a great candidate for UCSB but I would say USC would be a reach. But definitely apply because I’m very familiar with the area and know quite a few applicants that got in with similar stats as yours. It’s also VERY helpful you live in CA especially for the UCSB
