chances at Vandy? 33 act, 4.1 gpa, white male

from Texas, Eagle scout, average EC, nothing too exciting but excel with scouting is my interest. 200 or so hours volunteering. top 15% of highly competitive hs.

I hear white males from the southern (high draw) states are less desirable.

what cha think?

thanks,

You can look for ways to strengthen your presentation, starting with your essays and references and with how you are using your summer. Hopefully working somewhere and gaining some experiences that provoke thought/growth. It will also help if you could provide good achievement scores on APs or on subject exams on the SAT.

If you have any clarity on how you personally would make use of Vanderbilt’s vast academic resources, start thinking about this and writing. Read Vandy newspapers online and read the research magazines online.

If you have notions on what you would contribute to a vibrant student body life, by all means put that into words.

You don’t have to hold offices in clubs to be an interesting person.

the final advice to any Vandy applicants is to consider it a reach college with odds stacked against fully qualified candidates like yourself. Make sure you apply to at least one or two schools that you can afford financially and where you feel you will be admitted.

best wishes

Your S sounds a lot like my S. He applied this past year - from TN, ACT 33, GPA 4.25, 5 APs He is an Eagle Scout (thus a lot of service hours), Very involved with theater at school including major roles. Math competition awards. Great job history - promoted to assistant manager at Scout Camp Store at 16. Good essays. He was waitlisted but not selected. He plans to apply for transfer next year.

There is a good chance your S will be given serious consideration. I agree with Faline - make sure his essays represent him and his passions – not what he thinks they want to hear.

Nettik,
I had nearly identical stats and demogrpahics and am now going into my sophomore year at vanderbilt. If you are really serious about attending then definately use the early decision process, as it has a much higher acceptance rate. Best of luck!
