Ok, here are a few things. I’m kind of a mixed bag here. I am a really strong writer, and think my essays will be my hook for sure, because I think I will be able to convey my passion for politics (also a slight hook) very well. Also my ec’s reflect my interest in politics, and I’m getting a letter of rec from my senator. Another one of my recommendations will reflect that passion as well. I’m intending to major on poli sci wherever I end up, if you can’t tell.
But I am TERRIBLE at math, to the point where I am choosing to retake math 3 over the summer (will probably finish with a 60 this school year in that class, which is why I will retake it.) I’m hoping that my willingness to relearn the course material over the summer will show them I really am a hardworker. I also struggled a lot with depression and anxiety this year (like almost killed myself struggled,) but I’m only going to refer to it as a “health issue” in the additional info section, and won’t be mentioning suicide haha yikes.
So, yeah. I feel like I definitely have the “spark” of a Wellesley student, but the grades are questionable. Please let me know! thanks.
From what you are telling me, your ECs are very impressive. I assume you would like to major in something like political science or the humanities, so your ECs definitely reflect that. However, I would recommend that you retake the ACT and SAT tests again, simply to improve your score. I understand that your score in one section may surpass all the rest, but your other scores are dragging your composite score down. Aim for 30+ on the ACT and 1300+ on the SAT to improve your chances. As for GPA, you may want to take some summer classes at a community college to improve your GPA AND show colleges that you are ready for college-level coursework in different subfields of your area of interest. Community colleges offer a wide selection of different course material, and you may even find yourself enjoying these classes!
That said, your ECs really stand out! Start working on your college essays as soon as possible so you can revise them enough that they are virtually perfect by the time you submit them. I would say you definitely have a good shot at getting into Wellesley if you follow a few of these tips. Good luck!

Your involvement in ECs is great, however, I’m concerned whether Wellesley is right for you due to your GPA and test scores, as well as your struggle with anxiety and depression. Wellesley’s academic environment can be VERY demanding and stressful.
I’m pretty motivated and hard working, mental health has played a role in my gpa/test scores. Do you think that being a hard worker and going on necessary medication would be a help to handling the rigor?
^^Possibly - a current student would be better able to address this, though (I’m the parent of a graduate).
Yes, if your anxiety and depression are under control with medication and you have a plan of action for what to do if they become an issue again, I think you’ll be fine. Many, many Wellesley students struggle with the same thing. I did too, and I currently keep my anxiety and depression in check with medication. Before you leave for school, talk to your doctor about what you’ll need to do to to stay healthy during college. Do you know of a therapist in the area who can work with you during the transition to college? That’s something to consider before moving.
Anyway, feel free to PM me if you want to talk more.
Hey! I’m a current student at Welles. I think that redoing your ACT scores would be smart becos their average is 31. I As for the math, about half of the students who come to Welles take a course called quantitative reasoning if you cannot pass the QR test at the beginning of orientation. You seem okay so far tho. Get used to math!
I’m a current Wellesley student too, and agree that your EC’s are great. I wouldn’t worry too much about demonstrating interest in Pol Science since Wellesley doesn’t admit students to particular programs or majors. Lots of people change their course of study once they get to college so they don’t use your prospective major to make admissions decisions.
I’d also recommend trying to highlight your academic capabilities in other places of your application. Wellesley can be a rigorous place academically, so admissions officers may want to confirm that you can handle the courses so you’re set up for success (esp since your GPA may be a little lower than the average and you’re dropping an IB HL class). If you don’t want to retake your standardized tests, maybe consider addressing this in your personal statements or recommendations?
Good luck!
