I want to major in Political Science/Government. Quick question, what is the political scene like at W&M? Is it predominantly liberal, conservative, apolitical?

Thanks for reading!

Your GPA and ECs are fine. Just try to get your SAT score up and you should have nothing to worry about.

William & Mary students are generally very civically engaged when compared to most colleges. (you know being the alma mater of Thomas Jefferson and several other Founding Fathers and all) This takes many different forms, some students are involved in volunteering, others actvism, other people hosting club and educacational awareness events, while others are just well kept well informed about the world around them. Government and international relations are also some of the most popular majors.

I would say William & Mary is more politically balanced when compared to most colleges, drawing students with a wide variety of views, however it leans liberal like most colleges. There is a fair amount of discourse and it is not uncommon for students from the different organnizations to come together for a debate (look up the great debtbate on youtube). In the great debtbate you had young dems, conservatives, socialists, and libertarians in a room debating several issues of importance to the country. Many students have also been recently following the testimonies of James Comey, the FBI director, who was also a William & Mary alum.

I would say if you are leaning to the conservative side you are probably fine and will find like minded people, however you will be hard-pressed to find fans of this particular administration at least people that are openly so. I have known only one person to have openly expressed support for the sitting president and that was through social media. A couple of years ago we invited Condoleza Rice to campus as a commencement speaker and our current Chancellor is Robert Gates, so William & Mary is surrounded by history and those involved in civic service.
