any brutally honest comments would be appreciated, thanks.

Brutal honesty: don't count on it. A very average, nothing in the least unusual, Asian candidate. A first cousin counts for squat.

as much as that stung, i appreciate it (seriously). any more?

Asian, or not, you're about an average applicant to Yale (hard to believe, eh?), and average applicants have about a 10% chance. This not to say that you shouldn't apply AE or RD. Your SAT scores, SAT2 scores, GPA, even your ECs, are all Yale level. It's just that so many other kids apply to Yale with similar stats and equally decent ECs, and Yale is so darn selective, that most don't get accepted.

In short, if you want to apply to Yale, apply. Your stats are certainly strong enough. You're by no means an automatic reject, and you may get lucky and be the one in ten that Yale accepts.

By the way, if you're looking for a top-notch school that's a bit less difficult to get into than Yale, you should check out Washington University in St. Louis. Great school. Ranked #12 in the U.S. by U.S. News. Has a nice campus, really nice dorms, first-rate academics, lots of smart and friendly kids, and a caring faculty and administration. You'd be a very competitive applicant there.

Agree with the above, but I don't see the ECs as being Yale level. Read the Questbridge? thread to understand your competition.

the other posters are on crack...your EC's are just fine...it'll be your essays and teacher recs that will determine your fate...good luck

Whenever I see comments like Sultan's, I enjoy reading their past posts. Most read just like Sultan's!!

damn, those fbla awards are impressive damn

What's the matter Suze? I think Sultan has a great chance at Yale with a 1400!

now let's be nice children (:

anyways, i'm just banking on the fact that some normal people actually do get into HYPS.. they can't ALL be curers of cancer/editors in chief of the new york times/conductors of the la philharmonic at the age of 16, yes?

but this post helps alot, thank you.

Normal kids do get in, they are just not Asians from California (or Canada, like me). They are white kids from North Dakota.

really, because 7 people from my high school were admitted to yale last year, they were all asian, and about 5/7 of them were "normal."

it gave me hope.. hopefully not a false one lol. our school was quite successful last year.. we got about 20 ivy league acceptances (counting just HYP), and 9 people got admitted into stanford, so hopefully the same success rate will continue this year! [all info NOT an exaggeration]

Well who knows, maybe your school is very special! Any of them athletes, legacies, very low income, RSI grads or anything else sought after? 7 to Yale is a great deal at any public high school, perhaps your school has the secret!

last year really was a "shocker" (in a good way tho, of course!) all the people who got in were NOT legacies or athletes. they were the normal, middle-class asian studious kids who worked hard all four years and fortunately got paid back really well.

our school is one of the top publics in california, and we've been named newsweek's top 100 high schools for three years in a row now. is that a factor?

asdfoihg.. hopefully admissions will be just as kind to our year as well.

No, Newsweek would not explain it. That list leaves off the very top high schools, all privates and top magnets. I went to Andover, where 10 to Yale is great and at least half would be hooked. Wow for you hs if they sent 7 last year!

Bad boy, Bobby!

Woof. I though my school was competitive. 5 to Penn last year, and one to every Ivy except Columbia. But 7 to Yale and 9 to Stanford...20 to HYP altogether...(Bowing) I'm not worthy...I'm not worthy...

Do you attend Harvard Westlake? Only that school has a possibility to get 20 kids in HYP. How many people are in Stanford?

Very impressive-I say-Go for It!

thanks everyone..
well just a clarification, by 20 acceptances, i don't necessarily mean 20 different people.. it was mainly 8-9 students at our school who got into about 3 ivy leagues each, so it was about 20 acceptance LETTERS in total. but i'd say that's still pretty impressive, especially for a large public. :)

hrm.. well after reconsidering yale ea with my parents for a few days, i might just possibly change my early to princeton.

now don't take me as someone desperate to get into any ivy league. this was after some serious thinking. the primary reason why i wanted to apply to yale ea was because it was non-binding and i could compare fin aid options later (if accepted), but after estimating my financial aid at princeton with a family friend cpa, my dad decided it was a better option. i toured 6/8 ivy campuses this summer and participated in the info sessions, and princeton came out on top. i was hesitant to do early decision because it seemed so FINAL, but now i am fairly confident i will go for princeton.

so how do you guys think about that? do my chances for princeton ed differ at all?
