Chances...Be Brutal

I don't get how people have above a 4.0 GPA. Even if I had an A+ in a AP/AC course, I still would only have a 4.0 in the class. Is there another scale I should be using to determine my GPA?

some schools have where an AP class = 5.0 if you get an A on a 4.0 scale, and then some schoools have where 5.0 if you get an A in an honors class as well.

yea...like my school an hon course gave you a .5 GPA boost and an AP class gave a 1.0 GPA boost. Haha, I slacked off so much senior yr and still ended up with a 4.1, lol...too bad its all gone at Mich :( lol

my school does a .5 boost for both AP classes and honors classes

Oh.... I only get a .33 boost. One +/- grade.

wow, my H.S was really lenient..damn lol

That's why Michigan only looks at unweighed GPAs and determines course difficulty separtately.

In Michigan's brochure, they said the 25-75 percentile GPA was 3.6-3.8

Does anyone know if that is unweighted or weighted?

I think it's unweighted, because I went to a college visit, and they told me, to figure out your "Michigan GPA", take out the boosts, take out the pluses/minuses, take out freshman year, take out the electives.

Just looking for confirmation. If that's indeed unweighted, i'm in the bottom 25% :-(

A2Wolves, yes, the 3.6-3.8 GPA range is indeed unweighed, and only takes into account "core" classes for the Sophomore and Junior years. In fact, I think the mid 50%ile GPA range is now 3.6-3.9.

It is difficult for students with sub 3.5 GPAs to get into Michigan. But if you come from a top school, take a difficult courseload with lots of APs and have excellent standardized tests scores (over 1400 on the SAT and over 31 on the ACT), you still have a reasonable chance, even with a 3.3-3.5 unweighed GPA.

How do they take into account senior year grades? Do they at all? I wouldn't think so, because first semester doesn't end until January.

This dampers my hopes... hopefully they take into consideration my 6 +'s in AC/AP classes, which are counting as a full point lower than they should. That's 1/4 of my GPA. But from the sounds of it, they don't.

Whether they will look at your senior grades depends on whether or not you apply later rather than earlier and whether or not you are admitted as opposed to deferred. If you apply in late August and admitted by mid October, clearly, your senior grades will not be considered in your application to the program. On the other hand, if you apply in January, or if you are deferred, then I would say your senior grades will count toward the admissions decision.

As for +s and -s, they will be considered, but not in the caculation of your GPA. They will consider the +s and -s and the toughness of the classes you took separately from your "Michigan GPA", but if you have many +s and a very tough course selection, you will be given extra consideration, especially if you have done well on your AP exams and if you do well on your SAT/ACT.

Ok, obviously Michigan's not a safety because it's too good to be a safety for anyone but w those stats, you're in. mine were only slightly higher and i got a full scholarship. but, take this w a grain of salt because as UMich get's ranked higher the acceptance rate is going to lower, especially for out of state-ers. And be sure to write an awesome essay. i wrote about the muslim women not being able to wear headdresses in France, so be original and be passionate about what you write about. good luck!

Quick Update:
I got a 5 on my AP Bio exam but a 4 on my AP Lang. and LIt. exam
I have also moved to #5 in my class

*Lang. and Comp.

you will get credit for both bio and english with those scores-good job!

o, good, i was worried about the english one, thanks

Audre, AP scores of 4 and 5 are highly respected. I would not worry about getting a 4 in English, which is recognized as being one of the tougher, more subjective exams. Your chances with Michigan are certainly improved as a result of your improved class rank and excellent AP exam scores.

BTW, i got in, I'm really excited!!!!! (I heard in 24 days)

My school doesn't weight classes, but it does count A+ grades as 4.333 on the 4.0 scale. That puts my (unweighted) school GPA at 4.174
