Chances (ED to COM)

here I go…

BU has been my first choice school for the past 3 years now, and my ED application was sent in about two weeks ago. If I could get some input on my chances I’d really appreciate it.

I applied to COM.

I’m a middle class white girl (so exciting.)
HS: Highly Competitive Private High School (NJ)
GPA: 3.6 W, 3.4 UW (rising trend)
School Does Not Rank

SAT:
CR: 710
M: 530
WR: 760

SAT Subject Tests:
Literature: 730
US History: 730

Official Transcript notes that the most competitive student at our school takes 1-2 APs Junior Year and 3-4 Senior Year

Junior Year:
AP US History with a 4 on the exam.

Senior Year:
AP English Lit & Composition, AP Government & Politics (US), AP Art History

I also took honors/high honors courses throughout HS in English, Math, Physics, History

I took a fourth year of every subject, unlike half my class.

My math grades have always been mediocre (80, a B at my school) but all of my other grades were in the B+/A range (more As than B+) and all math grades earned were in honors courses. I applied to COM and will hopefully never have to take calculus… will my disappointing math scores/grades hurt me tremendously?

Obviously math has never been my thing, and I think they can figure that out from my test scores/transcript… it’s not that I don’t care, I DID prep for the SAT and I DO study… it’s just frustrating and it’s getting to the point where I’m accepting it for what it is. No one can be good at everything.

I got A’s in Business and Financial Management electives, so obviously financial math is something I can do… not that it’s that impressive, but it’s not as if I can’t count.

Extracurriculars:

Student Newspaper (Head of Women’s Issues Column), 3 year involvement
Student Yearbook (Performing Arts Editor), 3 year involvement
Academy Chorus (Soprano II), 4 year involvement
Italian Club (Participant), 3 year involvement

Volunteer Work/Community Service:
JOY (Joining Old & Young) Community Service Organization, 3 year involvement (*Currently serving as Student Director/President 2006-2007)
Camp Acorn (for disabled children/adults) Volunteer Counselor, 5 year involvement
American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life (2006), Team Recruiter

Work Experience:
Starbucks Barista (Sept. 2005- present), 16-20 hrs/wk

I was inducted into the Tri-M National Music Honor Society last year.
I received the President’s Volunteer Service Award in both 2005 & 2006.
National Merit Commended Scholar (75 CR, 55 M, 78 WR)
I traveled to Italy as part of my school’s Cultural Immersion program in 2004.
I took General Psychology (3 Credits) at my local Community College last summer and earned a 4.0 GPA for the course (in addition to working for the entire summer).

I worked incredibly hard on my essays and my recommendations were excellent (according to my counselor who loves me and talked to my teachers about their recs)

I’ve been on the BU mailing list for 4 years, my college counselor has spoken to our school’s representative on the admissions committee about me, I’ve corresponded with our admissions rep over e-mail twice and introduced myself in person. I’ve done nothing but express my love for the school including specific examples.

Like I said, I applied ED.

… and now I’m freaking out, especially about the math. Chances, please?

thanks!

Very good shot. I wouldnt stress.

Well, you got that all out so I hope you feel better. It's in their hands. Think about other stuff.

thanks for the input. I really should just relax.. I've done all I can, I guess. ahh. the BU website says admissions decisions are mailed no later than Dec 15.. but do we know if they mail them out all at once or as decisions are made..? I'm really looking forward to enjoying senior year after all this is over haha

you're good. my math score was the same and i got in. don't worry about it and enjoy life until you get the big envelope!

Decisions will be available on the web.

you'll be fine.

i'm in COM.. and there's a joke that COM stands for "college of optional math". i think math was the weakspot for lots of COM students. and no, if u make it, u will not have to take math ever again. COM requires 2 semesters of math OR science. so just take science when u get here. good luck!
