Hey everyone, I know I may not exactly have the scores for UVA but what do you think my chances may be? Also, is there anything I could do during my senior year or over the summer to boost my chances?

location: Virginia
race/gender: white/female

GPA:
freshman- 3.56 (1 honors course)
sophmore- 3.64
junior- 3.78 (1 AP and 1 honors)
senior- decent schedule (1 AP)

SATs:
1060/1600 (560m and 500v)-- I know it's awful, I'm taking them again June 3, 2006 after my tutor and a ton of studying.

OTHER:
4 years of field hockey (possible captain)
1 year of soccer (sportsmanship award)
1 year of track and field
placed 1st in science fair
3 years of national honor society
2 years in DECA
85 hours+ of community service
internship at an elementary school (want to major in education)
played years on a soccer team outside of school (captain)

You have somewhat of a lo-med chance if your during CLAS.
If your SEAS, your chances increase slightly because of the female factor.

IMO, I think just skimmed thru to get into UVA because not all my scores were that great.

But, my GPA was definitely higher and I had a much harder course load to compensate. Also, I did a lot of major clubs and community service as well as doing officer roles for some of the clubs.

UVA really cares about GPA.
For our school, it seemed that people got in because of their GPA this year which weighted is around 3.85 - 4.0+

Well, I think scores have to go up. The GPA is a little on the low side but it's definately good that you have a trend up.

do you have a passion? it sort of looks like you're all over the place. I think what you want to do is just show your colleges that you have something you really want to do or really enjoy. Don't go all over the place just trying to touch bases with everything.

I had about a 3.8 ish GPA and a high SAT score. I have also taken 10 APs. I would say that your chances are kind of low.

if you both live in va and are dead set on going to uva, and wanna do that whole community college - transfer thing, that would be a nice option if you don't get in regular decision. if you're not dead set on uva then don't put yourself through 2 years of community college when you could go to another great college and experience it all. =) and your essays are pretty crucial, too. don't give up - numbers aren't everything - but sometimes if you're really below everyone else applying there's nothing that you can do. best of luck!

you need to do several things to make yourself competitive. I would first suggest getting your SATs at least into the 1200 range - right now i feel as if you have 0 chance of getting in. Your GPA is well below the average (4.0 weighted) and your SATs are well below the 25%-tile (1260 I believe). You need to at least break into the 25% - 75% range of SATs. Also, you're really going to need to pick up a few more honors/ap classes senior year and rock them first semester.

I wouldn't follow Dor43mon's suggestion of applying to the E-school. While yes being a girl will be at your advantage, he forgets to mention that e-schoolers in general have the strongest overall stats coming out of high school - and since you're already pretty 'low' on that side, it puts you at an even bigger disadvantage. Besides, is sitting through a semester of e-school classes really worth it for you - especially if you're not that good in math?

i'm sorry but i am not familiar with "e-school" - also i know i can boost my test scores up much higher, i got a 1250 on my latest practice test so hopefully i'll be in that range - i guess i will sign up for more AP courses because that seems to play a large role in a lot of the colleges ive been asking about - another quick question...is the architecture progam at uva much more difficult to be accepted to? not that i want to do it, but a girl i know was deferred, then accepted with 3.8 and 1200 sats, i also heard she got a few of her older friends who went there to write a recommendation (would that help)? okay thanks for all the advice!

the a-school is as difficult to get into as the college, if not more.

the e-school is the engineering school - it generally accepts about 50% of its applications which is what leads some people to believe that its 'easier' to get into - when in reality its just a self selecting pool of people - everyone who applies generally has great stats.

getmein07, to be honest, you don't have a good chance. Your schedule is weak and so are your SAT scores. Furthermore, your school probably has two or three dozen better applicants than you. To improve your odds I'd guess that you'll need to improve your SAT score by about 400 points and ace 3-4 AP classes this coming fall. Do you know what your rank is?

no i don't, although i retaking the sats tomorrow so ill report back once i get my scores. my mom actually just called my counselor and signed me up for 2 more AP classes for senior year.

No, being from SoVa provides little (if any) "advantage". She would need to be ranked in the top 2-3% of her class to get in with those scores, IMO.
