Chances for Admission to GWU

I'm a rising HS Senior in CT and I'm wondering what my chances are for admission to GWU in the Fall of 2011; details are as folllow:
GPA: 3.5
SAT's: Reading 720; Math 620, Writing 710.
Several AP courses; Scored 4 on AP-Biology test & 5 on AP-History
Eagle Scout
Active in school theater program 3 yrs., incl. as lighting designer
Active in church mission programs
Have held a part-time job since start of Jr. year

I've heard good things about GWU, but I'm not sure where I stand academically; any insight would be appreciated.. thanks!

Your GPA and test scores are on the lower end of the gammat. Raise them significantly.
The ECS are nice, but not astounding impressive. If you get your GPA higher (4.0) and raise your test scores, I’d say apply.

rross

Is your GPA weighted or un-wighted? A 3.5/4.0 scale is not too bad if you have taken a difficult curriculum based on what is offered at you school AND your grades are consistently improving - 7 AP’s is good. Class rank is also helpful - are you at least in the top 20%?

Raising your GPA with realistically only 1 semester before GW looks @ your app is probably going to be difficult. That being said, all A’s your 1st fall of your senior yr. says something!

Your SAT CR/Writing is good - try and bring you Math up.

Of course very good ltr’s of rec/college counselor are important. Interview on-campus very, very important. Show “demonstrated interest” in GW!!

CJ

Your college essay will be extremely important- it’s basically your chance of a shot at getting in with otherwise average credentials. Recommendations are a close second. I would only do the interview if you are very good at interviews- if you’re bad at it, don’t do it. Focus on test scores, and your college essay. You have a chance, but, essentially “everyone” who is also applying to GW has your stats or better. (By “everyone,” I mean that some people might have lower stats, but your peer group that’s applying is very competitive with high GPAs/scores, with an ever-decreasing acceptance rate.)

Hello All. I applied as a transfer student for admission into the Elliott School. I have 56 credits under my belt at a CC w/ a 3.5 GPA. I am one Statistics course shy of an A.A. in liberal arts. I have served over nine years of active duty and I am on the board of a local non-profit. Does anyone think these stats worthy enough for admission? I wish you all the best of luck.

you did wayyy better than me and i got in with scholarship! im sure you will get in!

gwgrad you are a terrible person. that is all.

Your SATs in W and R are higher than my son’s and he got in. His math was slightly higher than yours. His GPA was also slightly, but not dramatically, higher. I think it’s definitely worth applying. PS–He absolutely loves it.

My son has a 34/36 on the ACTs, 780 Subject SAT Bio, 760 Subject SAT Chem. But, his GPA is 3.0. He goes to a top private school in Manhattan/NYC. I add this fact, because, I was told that the weighted GPA can be higher as a result. He has taken tough courses (e.g. Advanced Physics, Adv Math, Adv Computer Sci). Was told that schools would look at these favorably. Not sure though. He is also on his school’s football team. But, it is not a highly rated team :-)

Question: Does he has a shot at GWU?

You really need to visit the school once or twice and be prepared to show examples in your GW specific essays on the common app. GW wants to see your interest which will help you stand out from others with similiar credentials. For example, on your tour of the campus, did you have your first ‘only at GW moment’ ?, then write about that, or write about something else that sets them apart from the other schools you are looking at.

Mommymetal, thank you so much! My son is looking at American University and GWU as his targets. Georgetown is his stretch. This is very helpful.
