Chances at my #1 school GEORGE WASHINGTON

Basically I really want to go to GWU because of the proximity to DC and great political climate there. and I can't stand Georgetown.

ACT: 32
SAT2's: Math Lvl 2: 800, Chem 700
GPA: 3.45 (Mostly B's in AP classes, I had 4 AP's as a JR and will have 6 as a senior. A few C's on my transcript, in AP Chemistry and AP Literature, and some A's)
Rank: Top 30%
EXC: Debate Team Captain, Jazz Band, Football
Lots of Awards.

any questions go ahead and ask and i'll respond.. any advice/evaluations will be appreciated.
Thanks!

I think you stand a very good chance. Quite a few kids from my school are going there this year...most of them have lower SAT/ACT scores than you, but the same or higher GPA than you.

For good info on George Washington, go to this site:

http://www.gwu.edu/~facsen/faculty_senate/pdf/AssemblyMinutes9-20-04.pdf

and read pages 8 to 10.

In addition to giving some stats, it also lists unusual things considered in admission and tells you what it takes to get financial aid there.

George Washington doesn't post their average GPA, but I put it at about a 3.55 to 3.60UW with around a 3.90 to 4.00W. Their average SAT scores are around 620/620/655 (1895).

Your UW GPA is slightly lower than their average, but I estimate the W GPA is right in the ballpark of their average. Figuring your ACT score of 32 as being equivalent to a 710/710/710, and with your SAT IIs at 800/700, and good ECs, I give you around a 60% to 65% chance of acceptance.

George Washington isn't exactly the hardest school to get into, so I personally wouldn't worry about it.

Do you plan to apply ED?

Ray192 obviously doesn't know that George Washington University has a 37% acceptance rate...it isn't the hardest school to get into, but it isn't very easy to get in there either.

Anyways, to the OP: if you apply Early Decision to George Washington, you should be able to get in. But, you should only apply early there if you are certain there are no other schools you'd prefer.

see, thats my problem. i really like GWU because i want to go into politics and its right by downtown DC, but I'm planning on applying to Columbia. If I did get into Columbia though, I think I would want to go there. But, Columbia is a REALLY long shot for me.. how sure are you that I could get in ED?

BTW, how does the whole weighted GPA thing work? does GW refigure a GPA giving you more points for different classes or something? because my school only reports W GPA which is 3.45 for me, and my UW is like 3.35 (I'm trying to bring it up this semester)

My guess is that you'd get in if you did ED to GW but that Columbia would reject you because of your GPA.

Well in my estimation (keep in mind I'm no expert):
You probably wouldn't get into Columbia (low GPA and your ACT, while very good is not good enough to make up for a low GPA), but if you really, really want it, try.

GW ED: You'd have a very good shod shot in general. Do you plan to apply for IR (Elliot)? That may dim your chances.

GW RD: "Goodish" shot, but it seems risky.

Again, this is all FWIW, so listen to advice but take it with a grain of salt.

i'm applying to arts and sciences (prelaw) not IR.

Your chances at Columbia are not even 25%. You should apply ED to George Washington.

i have a feelin you'd get into gwu without ED

I'm planning on applying to georgetown, so i'm just curious why you "can't stand it"?

My guess is that this person's handle "rightwing" explains it.

Georgetown is where Bill Clinton got his Bachelors in Foreign Service degree. It's kind of known for being more middle to left-leaning--unlike George Washington University which is known as more of a "Republican" middle to right-leaning school.

In the past, the OP has explined that "rightwing" actually refers to soccer.

In that case, I have no idea. I don't think George Washington has a much better soccer team than Georgetown. (LOL)

I have friends who went to both schools (the one from George Washington works here in the office with me--and the one from Georgetown got his medical degree there and now is a orthopaedic surgeon in Westchester, New York).

First of all, I would like to thank wolfpiper for noting that my screen name does indeed refer to soccer. however i do not have plans to play college soccer. however, i am a moderate, and when i visited georgetown, lets just say the first building we walked into (without realizing what it was) was the multicultural center, and lets just say there was a.. loud student protest going on for a cause that i do not believe in. whereas at GWU I met with an intern for Jim Talent (R-MO), and the kid actually went to my HS's rival HS and he portrayed GWU as a much more moderate place than GTOWN
