I am going to be a freshman this year, and am looking into applying to boarding schools for my sophomore year. Some schools I am considering are Hotchkiss, Deerfield, Loomis Chafee, Choate Rosemary Hall, Taft, and Lawrenceville. I live in the midwest, and attending school campuses for interviews is out of the question for me. This leaves me with the option of skyping for my interview. How much do you think that will impact my chances? Will it be a significant disadvantage? Also, I attend an online public high school, so do you think this factor will impact my chances negatively?

My eighth grade year I took US History, Honors English 9, Biology, Honors Geometry, Service Learning, and Spanish 2, earning all A's first semester and all A's except an A- and B+ second semester. This year I am taking APUSH, English 10, AP Bio, Algebra II, and Spanish 3.

As far as extracurriculars are concerned, I am a competitive figure skater and have been involved in the sport since I was seven. As a freshman I will compete on the High School Club "A" Team. I have played tennis since I was 3, and am considering playing this fall, because I could play varsity. My main sport is nordic skiing, and I started just two years ago. This year I placed top 10 at state for middle school. I am very involved in volunteer work, and volunteered for the Obama campaign last fall, and have volunteered at my local nursing home since I was in 5th grade. I also volunteered with the learn to skate program at my rink this past year.

These are my qualifications! Any help, advice, and answers are greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I asked about interviews when I applied last year (International) and it does not hurt your chances of getting in, I know several kids both from cc and friends of mine who got into some schools you listed without visiting the school

I like your list of schools, I visited Hotchkiss, Loomis, Taft and Choate and they’re all great and have amazing campuses!

Thats great to know that my chances wont be affected by not visiting the campus, and great to hear that they have beautiful campuses! Did you decide to attend any of those schools? If so, which school, and what was your opinion on it? Thanks so much for the help and the reply(:

Out if the schools you mentioned I only applied to Hotchkiss. I’m from the Midwest also and I was originally only going to do an alumni interview so I could stay in state. But then she called my parents to tell them she really suggests that I do an on campus interview. It’s really worth it, but if you can’t it shouldn’t hurt you. Hotchkiss is beautiful and even though no one except varsity athletes were there when I visited I still was able to get the vibe of the school.

At the end I did not apply to Hotchkiss, but I think it was the most beautiful campus I saw, Im attending NMH in the fall (10 Minute drive from DA), a huge beautiful campus in the middle of nowhere (like Hotchkiss haha)

I would have attended Choate, but I was rejected. hahaha :)

You can have an interview using Skype and I don’t think it affects your chance negatively. Schools tend to understand the individual’s situation. The reason why they encourage (or sometimes want) the students to come visit the campus is you can see the campus and meet many people there. So you will likely have better understanding of the school vibe, etc. That will help when you have to choose the school after march 10. So, I would suggest you visit the schools of your first choice at least if it is ever possible.
