Hi, my daughter's friend is a double legacy but an average student. What are her chances of getting into Stanford?

Legacy really means little (unless, of course, the alumni are big contributors to the school). We'd need to see your daughter's other stats to judge her chances.

Hi thanks for getting back. It's not my daughter, actually it's her best friend. My daughter's been working really hard and her friend (double legacy and dream is Stanford) is not and seems to think the two legacies are a shoe-in. Though they're only first semester freshmen now, we're concerned by the attitude.

I don't think any level of legacy is a guarantee. She needs to show a record that makes her a good choice - strong academics, strong ECs, intellectual vitality etc. If she's a strong candidate, it's generally true that legacy takes the randomness out of the decision to a decent extent, but if she thinks that she can get in with an unimpressive record (average would be unimpressive in the Stanford pool) on her legacy status, she is in for a Darwinian moment.

Hi Ailey,

Thanks. I guess I or my DD can say something to her, but she's not my kid so if she doesn't listen we'll have to leave her be until her Darwinian moment. :/

Hi, she actually just stopped by and I talked to her and she's seems to have taken it well.
