Hope they know know ISC or my hardworking of studying rigorous curriculum than CBSE will fail
@MYOS1634 I found this thread by accident. You told this guy @jainul98 that he should have some sat subject tests in humanities in addition to the sciences. Is that true? I originally planned on applying with subject tests in math level 2,physics,chem,and literature. Giving the chemistry subject test was just a formality;it’s not related to my intended majors.I don’t even LIKE chemistry(except physical chemistry) but since I covered most of the topics tested in my junior year(I’m in my senior year now) i decided to give it anyway. For some reason I decided to take the chem and lit THIS may.(I didn’t know anything about solid state then). My literature exam was EXCELLENT- much better than any of the practice tests I took(I could never finish on time on those). You know why I finished this time? Because my head was spinning with the awful fiasco that was my chemistry exam. There were at least 10 questions left by the time the exam ended and I completely blindly guessed all of them. I was pretty horrified and I considered walking out of the exam room without giving the next exam.Somehow I gave the literature exam and even had time left at the end to go over the math level 2 and physics exam papers ( I wasn’t giving them on this exam administration).Any English exams I give always go better if something happens which numbs me or shocks me before it( I guess it prevents me from over analyzing the pieces and second guessing myself).I got 800 on critical reading on the SAT because I was mostly thinking about my horrifying and incomplete essay while I was taking the exam.(the essay’s the first section you know ). So I looked at the scaled scores conversion table and realised I was probably going to get 710-740 on my chemistry subject test. That was NOT good enough(considering my not so awesome grades in chemistry at school anyway).it was my own fault for NEVER taking a timed practice test in chemistry.and there WERE many questions I had already made a decision about in the first half of the paper -BUT I never bubbled them on the answer sheet(I wanted to to come back to think over them some more-even the ones I was extremely sure about). I canceled my scores the next day. I had this weird idea that even with score choice, if I take the chemistry subject test again(which I WILL) I would have to send BOTH scores-and I really did not want colleges to see it took me two tries to get an 800(I literally can’t afford to get any less.I can’t pay 55000 dollars per year like @jainul98 here- I have around 30,000$ for my ENTIRE undergraduate education.). Finally,I will come to the actual point.I’m taking math level 2,physics and chemistry in november.Should I take literature in dec or something?(you can only cancel by test date,so my lit test got cancelled along with the chem one).I’ll have my hands full with preparing for my preboards and annuals and this big engineering entrance test that our country holds (it’ll be in April though, and the annual exams would start from March).a literature test is not really that important, compared to these things, even though I want to give it.Right? PS- @jainul98 , when @mumbai98 mentioned international Olympiads,I think he meant THE international Olympiads(the ones in physics chemistry, etc that are actually held worldwide ). I also have several gold medals in IEO,NSO,IMO and NCO with a few state topper medals and the scholarship for excellence in English(related to performance in IEO) and certificates from ASSET and MacMillan exams from when I was young, but you know what? It doesn’t count for shit.it makes almost no difference.the level of the ACTUAL international Olympiads and these is very, very different.A high achieving girl who’s a friend of mine laughed about the idea of sending results of IMOs,IEOs etc to colleges.she made it to ISEF(in 8th grade) and has been to a space research competition/meet/something in america when she was THIRTEEN and her team won against the Chinese and Americans.I felt very ashamed for even thinking of sending the results of IEOs or whatever when our competitors are doing such things.however, the scale of our achievements is not defined by what others think of them, but what they meant to us-how they expanded our perspective and inspired us to grow. You could explain somewhere on your application how significant the IEO and Macmillan were to you.if you make a convincing case,it’ll definitely help your application. By the way,I live in Gujarat too.
@musicprincess33, you really need to take a deep breath. MIT is not India, and the idea that the difference between an 800 and a 740 on the Chem SATII would mean the difference of getting in is simply wrong. Read this and this.
101 The "paragraph" is useful concept.
Oh, @collegemom3717 I have nearly read ALL of the articles on the MIT admissions website!! Not because I want to get in(I’m not applying)but because I like the idea of a place where people pursue knowledge for its own sake and collaborate on interesting projects together. It just calms me down knowing there is such a place in the world. After all, that site is where i first encountered fractals (which sparked my interest in maths ,which snowballed to the point I considered being a math major).I know I can trust you because you provided me with the articles I think best describe how to go about the college admissions process-hell ,they would be at the top of my list to recommend to somebody too. the thing is, these exams, and even the college application process, for me isn’t about getting in.its about proving to myself, and to some extent to the people around me who don’t think I can do it,that I AM competent in certain subjects, whatever my cgpa is or whatever my teachers think about me.I’ve been in the same school with the same people for ages(this is my 14th year at this school) and after some point you start to think what people think about you is who you really are and you can never break free or be something they think you can’t . I’ve surprised myself a lot because of this applying thing- I’ve gone further in English literature than I ever had before, realised that it WAS possible for me to be extraordinarily great at something if I tried;do things people don’t normally do.I’ve developed an interest in maths and physics from the extracurricular reading I did from preparing for this exam and or that competition-and realised that the experience and exposure to new stuff you get from preparing for the exams is worth more than any lousy certificate.STILL,I intend to get a 2400 on the SAT and 800 on my subject tests just to prove I CAN.to myself.I know that wasn’t my best performance on the chemistry exam BUT I know I can get it.Not believing I can get it would be undermining my potential and self-belief. Thanks for your support and advice.PS- if the deep breath thing was because of how I capitalize some words,I do it because I want to place emphasis on them but don’t know how to italicize them.that’s the way I would say them, although I admit on paper it looks like I’m intermittently shouting.
@NickFlynn I wondered when someone would finally ask me about that(lol). No matter how much space I put it doesn’t seem to come across when my comment is pasted.
I definitely think you have a chance of getting in. Your SAT subject test and your TOEFL tests are great. MIT looks at you holistically, and if you give them a great college essay or great interview, you have a chance of getting in. I’m not saying that you have a 100% chance of getting in, but I know that your chance is not 0.05% (unlike what @outlooker says).
@renaissancedad Sir, I respect you with my full heart. Not only because you are undeniably correct but also you are older than me. My parents have always taught me to respect elders whatsoever. Thanks for your humble attitude.
I think this thread will be illuminating, especially how “perfect” scores can actually play against you:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-admissions/1792815-warning-to-all-future-applicants-dont-apply-to-all-reach-dream-schools.html
Did op retake SAT this June 6?
@NASA2014 what?
Did you take the June 6 Sat?
yes, i took sat subject test on june 6.
did you get a better score than last time?
Which is better-13 high level certificates or 17 medium level certificates?
Absolutely nothing.
I think this thread has been exhausted because we all know MIT is a reach for 99.99% of the applicants…can someone close this?
If this gets close, that means every Indian is afraid of getting accepted by MIT
^^^???
We’re helping him get into MIT. He might be rejected, but at least we tried
