Chances for Bio Major

Hi, this is my first post here.

Anyways, I am a Micro-Biology Major at a CC.

As of now, the major is considered to be an impacted science major and I do not have to take majority of the IGETC courses, which means I get to have fun in the more competitive classes.

This is my second year at a CC and my GPA should be around 3.5 at the end of this quarter (Fall quarter grades count).

Not only that, I had some family related issues which I might bring up in the essay because I think they might help.

Anyways, I have a TAA for Davis, which I am not worried about. However, the big three, UCSD, UCLA and UCB I am.

What do you think?

oh yes, I also plan to apply to USC and Cornell.

microbio is very competitive. make sure you have plenty of ECs. how many units will you have by the end of spring?

Ok here are my stats...

I will have all physics classes completed except relativity.
All chemistry and biology classes will be completed.
I will have two quarters of organic chemistry.
I will have all math completed (Calculus sequence).
All smaller reqs, such as english, philosophy will be completed.

Anyways, I should have around 104 units completed.

The mean GPA according to some sources for my major has been around 3.6 by looking at past average amitted GPAs.

In terms of extra-curriculars, I have none.

This is due to family circumstances. In short, I work because of the family. However, these pressures have been alleviated.

i think UCSD is a safe bet. a 3.6 with all your prereqs completed makes you very competitive against all the other applicants that wont' have ochem and physics. however, your lack of ECs is your weakness which will make UCLA and USC a slight reach. berkeley and cornell will be reaches. these higher ranked schools are looking for leadership, volunteer work, and campus involvement. on the other hand, UCLA will be easier to get into with TAP. are you TAP?

Sadly, my CC does not offer a TAP program. It's a pity because those are used for the college of arts and sciences, which my major is for. Alas, I will just "skate it off".

Speaking of EC's, I am in a Science and Engineering Society.

When the cornell deadline comes around in march, I will be in the Science and Engineering Society and the Honors society.

Looking forward, UCSD is a great school for biology. UCLA, if I get in, will be much better. TAA with Davis right now makes me feel comfortable with any of the school choices.

yeah, unfortunately the TAP program would basically "seal" the deal. the percentage of tap students admitted is over 90%. i heard of only one case of a tap student getting rejected from UCLA - she didnt turn all over her college work completed. so her overall gpa was lower. they caught her and rejected her application.

Well, then the question is, how many people apply to UCLA as my major, and aim for a TAP?

Anyways, I am seeing a UCLA counselor tomorrow, and I can ask him about this.

how did you schedule to see a UCLA counselor?

they are coming to our CC tomorrow.

Hey, I just called UCSD and asked the admissions office if this Fall quarter grades will count. They said no. AHhhhh?!?!

This means they only evaluate last year's grades.

What source did you get your information from??

If you turn in a WIP form in december.

Work In Progress form. You can submit your grades in Decemeber.

I think when you asked them, you didn't ask them about WIP grades.

Look at this.

Search for WIP on the form.

I think the UCSD person might be incorrect. My counselor told me that Fall grades count....so yea.

Phew thanks. Works kind of like the transition from high school to college then, great :).

Thanks again!
