Would EMT training add to my extracurriculars for a pre-med path? I want to apply ED to Brown/PLME but would be more than happy with just Brown undergrad.

What are my chances?

Thanks!!

I’m guessing that if you applied ED you would get it. But just make sure Brown is your unequivocal first choice if you decide to apply early.

EMT training is only useful if you actually plan on working as an EMT for a significant amount of time. It’s not something to do to fill your resume, and it won’t particularly help you on the path to med school.

I know that Brown and many other schools I’m applying to have student EMT’s that can work on campus so I was hoping to get a headstart on that by already having my certification.

Perfect GPA and near Perfect SAT score. BC in Sophomore year is unheard of, and I thought my BC in junior year was insane. lol no math in junior or senior year :P?

My school offers multivariable calculus post ap… so i’ll be taking that senior year (next year)

but anyway, yes brown PLME would be the ultimate goal and is very selective. Think about if you don’t get into the program. Make sure you would be okay with that. (You obviously have a shot at getting in, though)

You will definitely get into brown in my opinion, you’re application can’t be much better (but it does lack some hook - maybe you didn’t post it)

The only thing that would help your application is being an URM but that’s obviously not necessary to get into the top schools.

I’m not sure how much applying ED helps your chances of admission so maybe consider just going Regular Decision.

Good work.

@AimingTop50 I will take AP Stats and Calc 3 next year(this year it didnt work with my schedule) and unfortunately no hooks like URM or legacy. what else would be considered a hook?
I’m hoping to gear my story towards achievement in research and my publications as well as some volunteering efforts I’m very passionate about, which showcase my love and appreciation for the arts. Brown is my absolute dream school so I’m perfectly fine applying ED knowing I probably won’t get PLME

Are you asian? Just wonderin…

A hook is not needed but it is definitely the latest trend in college applications and being an URM does help.

I heard asians have 50 points subtracted from their SAT and Hispanics have a bonus of 185 points and African Americans have 230 points subtracted from their SAT.

This was done on a study looking at Princeton’s admissions.

Legacy is mattering less and less but it still has some effect (not as much as URM, though)

Give some serious consideration to your state schools too. They are great in California and insanely affordable compared to Brown.

I’m giving serious consideration to UF for premed and have a similar GPA to yours (will be getting SAT back the 23rd)

Brown would be on my list for the PLME but they did not give enough financial aid for my liking

Yes unfortunately im asian so im very stressed about applying to ivies. UCLA and UC Berkeley are my top choices after Brown.

Asian Americans make up around 6% of US population.
They also make up 15% of Harvard students.

Do the math.
You are one of the best asians 15% of Harvard students are asian.

So you still have the chance. Just don’t worry so much, you will succeed no matter where you go.

Let’s be very clear here – a “hook” is something that a student has that meets a university’s institutional priorities. So – if a university has a priority to increase the number of first-gen students, a first-gen student has a “hook.” One cannot create a hook. Or get a hook. Or buy a hook at the corner market. You can figure out if you offer something that a college really wants. Many colleges says they want geographic diversity. If you live in New Jersey, then you sure aren’t bringing geographic diversity to Columbia – but Reed might want you. There are many schools out there that would consider being Asian a hook – but they aren’t the Ivies.

@lilinitique Make sure you run the Net Price Calculator at Brown and other schools you apply to, and make sure you discuss the results and other finances with your parents. There is no point applying if your parents can’t afford to send you.

@AimingTop50 Points are not subtracted for being Asian. Period. Nor added for others. If you want a top college, vet your sources. When you use 2ndary sources, try to figure their bias. Double that when the media quotes someone not involved. And the study was not limited to Princeton admissions.

The researchers looked at stats, not actual applications or other factors. The author said the view was too narrow to draw conclusions about admit reviews.

Kids do take AP or BC as early as freshman year. It’s not common and depends on the student and the hs policies.

Always good to dig into what your targets say they look for, not go on hearsay.

@lookingforward read the study more carefully. It actually doesn’t say that points are added in admissions. However, the admission officers’ bias/preference for certain races has the same NET EFFECT as if adding points, in that, even when controlling for other factors, the Asian students with high SAT’s have the same acceptance rate as White/URM students with slightly lower SAT’s.

^ True @barackhussein .
But, whites are also at a disadvantage when compared to Hispanics and African Americans because they are not “minorities”.

Yes. Although this is getting off topic now haha.
By the way, I think you have a solid shot at Brown whether you apply ED or RD. Since its your first choice, I would recommend ED, especially considering you get a little boost in admission rate.

@barackhussein She’s looking to get into a BSMD program, though

I’d definitely go RD

Sorry if this has been asked a million times before but there is some advantage to ED right? PLME is my top choice BSMD program I will take any advantage I can get. Also I thought applying ED might have a less competitive applicant pool because many competitive applicants will apply EA to HYPSM and not want to be locked into Brown UG?

The question of whether applying ED has an advantage has been argued several times on this very forum. Brown insists it does not. The numbers suggest there is a slight advantage. Many ED acceptances go to recruited athletes, legacies and development admits.

If your parents can afford Brown and it’s your first choice, then apply early.

Applying ED is certainly not a DISADVANTAGE. Thus, whether or not applying ED is an advantage, if it is your first choice, you ought to do it. If you don’t get in early, you certainly would have been rejected regular anyways. If you do get in early, you don’t know for sure whether or not you would have gotten in regular, and are thus benefitted for having applied early.

Plus, think about it. You get to actually enjoy senior year without worrying about applying to 10 other schools.

update: got an 800 on math 2! would bio be a good subject test to take? is it necessary to take a humanities subject test as well?
