Chance me!!
Hi! Currently a junior and still trying to figure out where I should apply to. There’s a ton of schools that I’m interested in - I really want to go out of state (CA resident) but it will probably be too expensive without scholarships (any suggestions for schools with good aid?). I’m applying as an engineering major, probably either biomedical or mechanical. Please chance me and give me suggestions (I’m not applying to all the schools on the list below but they are the ones I’m seriously considering)!
Also - is it important for me to take the writing portion of SAT/ACT for any of these schools in particular?
New SAT: 1380 (1400 superscored)
I’m going to actually study and take one more time because this is pretty bad - I got like a 650 in math (which is weird for me because I love math and do really well in math at school)
ACT: 31 composite (34 English, 33 reading, 27 math, 30 science)
Also going to take this once more with hopes of improving math score!
Total UW GPA: 3.83
10-12 UW GPA: 3.89
Total Weighted GPA: 4.14
10-12 Weighted: 4.33
Top 20% of my class - I got to a school that’s pretty well known for being rigorous
Course load: I’ll end with only 5 AP courses, but I’ll have taken 4 courses at the junior college in my city. (English, psychology, and 2 art)
Awards: nothing major, I’ve gotten MVP for tennis and track but those don’t really mean much I don’t think.
Extra Curricular:
Varsity Tennis freshman/sophomore years, had to quite because of injury so I switched to Varsity XC for junior/senior. Varsity track all 4 years, co captain sophomore year and captain junior/senior years.
Founder/President of a running club at my school.
My school as a really great Tech program so I’ve taken IB Design Tech (basically teaching engineering principals and CAD). Through the program we do a mandatory summer internship so I’ll have 150 unpaid intern hours from UCI Medical.
No community service but I do have a job.
I’m not sure who I’m getting letters of rec from (suggestions on this?) probably my pre-calc teacher and then ether English 3 or track coach.
Major: Engineering (probably BMED or mechanical)

Gender: Female
Income: probably around $140k
My mom has a degree from USC but my dad didn’t go to college (trade school)
I honestly have no hooks - I’m a middle class white girl from Orange County (also leads me to another question - what do I write about in college essays when they all ask me about overcoming adversity and stuff?)
Colleges I’m looking at:
Cal Poly SLO (honestly my first choice and the one I’m most interested in being chances for - I know it’s really competitive and engineering is a highly impacted major)
USC (major reach but I’m a legacy)
Rice (another big reach)
Emory (another reach lol)
Georgia Inst. of Tech
Rochester Inst. of Tech
University of Rochester
Texas A&M
UT Austin
UNC Chapel Hill
My safety schools are probably Cal Poly Pomona, ASU, Boise State, and CSUF.
