Hello,
I applied to SDSU, CSUF, CSULB, Chico State, and UC Santa Cruz (I know it’s not a cal state). I have a 3.27 cal state GPA. I applied mainly for social work, the schools that didn’t have social work I applied undecided, and I applied to CSUF for Theater.
I have four years of honors level theatre courses.
SAT: 1150/1600
GPA: 3.15/4
Also, it would be great to know if you advise that I take the SAT again (it would be my third time).
All Cal states (except SLO) use the eligibility index to rank applicants by major.
(CSU GPA x800) + (SAT Math + CR). Your EI is 3766.
To be competitive for SDSU, you want a 4100+ so a Reach school
For CSULB, a 3900+ makes you competitive so a slight Reach-Reach school.
CSUF around a 3800+ is competitive but since you applied for Theater, you might have a decent chance.
Chico State EI of 3700+ is competitive so it is a Match.
UC Santa Cruz’s admit rate for your GPA is around 10% so a High Reach.
What is your local Cal State since you would have priority? You might want to add Cal state LA, although impacted has a very good social work program and maybe some of the non-impacted Cal states that offer social work such as Monterey Bay, Cal poly Pomona and Sacramento State.

Good Luck.
ALSO: I forgot to mention I am out of state
I chanced you on one of your other threads when you were planning on applying only as a Theater Major. Your GPA is increased slightly but most of the schools on your list are still going to be a tough admit.
@Gumbymom Hello! First, I wanted to thank you for the knowledge you have provided me and also to the rest of the students who are interested in California schooling. You truly are very helpful! I wanted to get a final opinion of yours. I’ve had family who have lived in both San Diego and the Bay Area and I used to spend summer breaks with them. I pretty much know/have been to everywhere San Francisco and below. It’s been a dream of mine for about 6 years to move out there for college, which is why I am so persistent. I am prepared to pay the tuition and other expenses. So, I wanted to hear your final opinion on the school’s I applied and if you think I’ll get into any of my preferred ones. I’m very aware a lot are reaches, but I took the chance anyways.
Cal State GPA: 3.27
UW GPA: 3.15
SAT:1150/1600
4 Years of honors theatre
Good amount of extra curricular(Theatre, some volunteering, and then job)
Out of State (NJ)
Hispanic/Caucasian
Schools (Mainly CSU’s, but 2 UCs and a private):
In a somewhat order of preference(disregarding chance)…
UC Santa Cruz
Pepperdine University
UC Riverside
San Diego State
Cal State Long Beach
Chico State
San Jose State
Cal State Fullerton
San Francisco State
Please let me know what you think and if you think I’ll be admitted to at least one or two of them. I’m not really looking for statistics, because I have read everything
Are you still pursuing Theatre as your major? Are any of the schools requiring an audition prior to acceptance?
No, at the Cal States I applied mainly social work (one or two may be undecided, I forgot). I only applied theatre at Fullerton, however it is non audition.
Santa Cruz- Undeclared(life sciences)
Riverside- Biochemistry
Pepperdine-Biochemistry
San Francisco State- Pre-biochemistry
When I first applied early in October I still had the intent of pursuing social work, even though that obviously isn’t my intent anymore instead it’s science. Fortunately, social work is commonly not impacted as frequent as bio is.
SJSU/SFSU/Chico State: Match
CSU Fullerton: High Match-Low Reach
CSULB/SDSU/UCR/UCSC/Pepperdine: Reach
Freshman Admits for UC GPA of 3.0-3.39:
UCR: 25%
UCSC: 10%
I think you would have had a better chance at some of the Reach schools if you had pursued a Theater major since academics are important, but if they are auditioned based then the audition would have been more highly considered.
Your eligibility index calculates out to 3766. You are within range for SJSU/SFSU and Chico state at this EI. CSU Fullerton is competitive at 3800+, CSULB at 3900+ and SDSU at 4100+.
Your GPA will hurt your chances at the UC’s especially since you are below average for all the UC campuses. As you can see from the Freshman admit data posted, your GPA will make these all Reach schools. Your SAT scores are also on the low side so these will not help your chances. Your EC’s may give you slight boost but cannot makeup for your academic stats. I wish you good luck and you should get into 1-2 of the Cal States.
UC Santa Cruz - Unlikely
Pepperdine University - - Unlikely
UC Riverside - Unlikely
San Diego State - Unlikely
Cal State Long Beach - Unlikely
Chico State - very likely
San Jose State - very likely
Cal State Fullerton - probably
San Francisco State - very likely
Good luck.
@NCalRent do you think there is a chance though for the unlikely schools? Or would it basically be a miracle if I was admitted? And also from you opinion, out of the likely schools which do you think would be best for biochemistry/sciences?
Of course there is a chance…but, it is like 1 in 5 or less.
I wouldn’t worry about ‘best’ or even picking a favorite now. all of your likely schools offer a solid education but operate in very different environments. You’ll need to decide, “do i want to be in Chico, SF, SJ or wherever.”
tour the schools that admit you - talk to some students and teachers and see which campus feels like home.
@Gumbymom @NCalRent although I was rejected from SDSU and CSULB, I am extremely pleased to let both of you know that I was admitted to UC Riverside for Biochemistry:) Still awaiting decisions from the other California schools.
Congratulations and best of luck.
Congrats on Riverside - I love it when I am wrong about those calls.
@NCalRent Thank you! Feeling over the moon. To be honest, I even expected not to get in, so the feeling was amplified when I saw my admitted status!
@Jack1212 I already applied for all these school in the fall lol. Just got admitted to UC Riverside haha
