Chances for Columbia (Again)

is your GPA weighted or unweighted? like is 4.0 = straight A’s?

4.0 = straight A’s yes. we don’t have unweighted GPA.

Thanks Tombor! Good luck to you too!!!

Columbia=Princeton-Reach for everyone

bumppp…

I don’t know much about Columbia, but your academics are decent and your ECs are great, especially your participation in those international festivals. Good luck, wish you get in!

bumpp…

ur gonna keep getting the same answers…

no, there’s different people looking at the forum. and you’re still asking people are JHU too…

*about. oops.

You have very strong ec’s, and if they see that you have passion, that’ll make a great impression on them. The only bad I see is your SAT score, but based on how exemplary you are with music, I don’t think you are out of the competition. As of now, I think you’re up there in the applicant pool they actually consider so best of luck.

It’s a shame that piano isn’t needed at a univeristy. While it does show true accomplishment and great skill, the piano is rarely needed - only in select groups. I am not sure if columbia will see this as something that’s wanted in the university. Your SAT scores are like in the bottom 25%ile. It is highly unlikely, unless if they are so impressed by your piano level that they decide that it overrides everything below average about your application.

good chance for colombia since you are well rounded. i would take the UNC scholarship though

I strongly disagree with some of the comments here; I actually think you have a good shot. Let me preface my “chance” with this: Yes, Columbia does have tons of academically stellar applicants. I’m sure they could fill up their entire class with all the 4.0, 2300+ SAT applicants, but this obviously isn’t case. Why? Because the adcoms are looking to FORM a class–a class with diverse talents, interests, backgrounds, etc. The reason so many applicants with almost spotless records get rejected is because that’s all they are; they have nothing else to offer. They’re looking for people with passion, and more specifically, people who pursue their passion. This, along with grades, is arguably the single most important thing in admissions to a school of such high caliber; otherwise, there wouldn’t be so many rejected applicants with such high stats.

So to the OP: You have passion, and have demonstrated this passion. Your music EC’s are amazing, and you have an impressive portfolio (though I’m not an expert on photography). Yes, as everyone has pointed out, your SAT’s are pretty low for Columbia. BUT, how low is too low? You have everything else going for you: great grades, GREAT EC’s, great recs. (couldn’t see your essay btw, the link isn’t working. I’m assuming it’s also great  ) Basically, (of course this is just my opinion) I think it comes down to whether or not Columbia is willing to forgive you for your test scores. It’s very possible that they will.

I would say that you have solid enough academics to be competitive for these schools, and that you should focus on wowwing them in your auditions. If you’re majoring in music, they’re probably atleast somewhat more concerned with your talent than your grade in Algebra II.

You’re definitely in/match for Columbia. Your major helps because only about 5% of the kids there are music majors, and your ECs are killer. You’ve got an amazing shot. Yes, your SAT kinda brings you down a little bit, it’s still a good score, but you definitely make up for it in GPA and ECs. OH and your photography is AMAZING, I wish I could do that! hhahah  How did you learn to do that?

No one on this forum can say whether you’re “in” or not. We can all root for you, though! Now is the time for patience…

I think you have a good shot. Top schools can’t ONLY take the 2400 students. You have a lot going for you to balance out your scores. I say go for it, but know that they are all reaches (as they would be for anybody). Good luck!

Hm … judging from the info I have here’ I give you 30-70 odds of accepted-rejected.

well…it really depends on how rest of your app looks and how good you are at the piano

just outta curiosity, what pieces are you putting together for the music audition at juilliard?

1900s for sat is kinda hard to make up for when applying to an ivy… dont u think?
