The ivies are reaches, if you write a killer essay and get some more leadership positions I’d say you have a really good shot.

ECs are weak because there is nothing unique or extraordinary about your activities. It’s just standard things and random clubs with, as of yet, no leadership. There’s nothing that you seem to be significantly involved, or much outside of the school, and there is no coherence. Btw, a 2200 is not a great score… def. not something that could pick up lackluster ECs. But then again, private school advantage will probably help you (to what degree is hard to say). But I repeat, if you were to apply from a public school, your chances would be very low at Columbia, Brown, and Princeton. Be thankful that you can afford a private school education which can boost your chances in college admissions.

I must say that a 2200 is not a bad score whatsoever and I do have leadership positions set up as of this year. Im starting up a club that I am a president of and I am going to be president of another. And I am very passionate about my volunteer work. And piano, just because it doesn’t seem obvious to you. Ive also heard that coherence is not necessary by many who go to the schools on here, they told me the spread out factor may just tell the admissions different things about me, I won’t quit the things I love for the sake of coherence. I know I’m not the strongest in ECs, but You sound very final, but I am dedicated to strengthening my ECs this year. And I am taking up an internship fir this year. But overall, thanks for your opinions, it gives me a few things to think about for my upcoming junior year.

Oh, I apologize, I didn’t realize you were only a rising Sophmore! You shouldn’t even bother posting on these threads yet because there is SO MUCH that will happen by the time you’re one. Look around, gain an understanding of what it takes to get into top schools and work on that coherence, passion,… 180 is a great PSAT score for a freshman and you could easily be up in the 2300+ range by the end of junior year. Based on your projected path, you should have no trouble getting into a top ivy. Honestly, it’s way to early to say anything now. Maybe work on developing your poetry skill and enter competitions/publish or something…this would make you stand out. I’d imagine you’d have good leadership by junior year.

So the fact I’m published and could win the whole poetry contest is a really good thing, right?

Like everyone else has said, Columbia, Princeton, and Brown will all be tough, but that’s true for anyone. Continue to focus on your school work and try to get a good SAT score and you should be solid for the rest of the schools on your list! Thanks for chancing me and good luck!

I want to be pre-med or pre-dentistry, i am going to work in a dentist’s office, btw. I also contacted a school for a community service project that i will start. What are some suggestions of what else I can do to strengthen my ECs.

PSAT is fine, you’re gonna take it again-

All have a competitive chance, ivies are reaches though

How much would ED at Columbia or Brown help my chances? How are my chances at jhu and duke?

Seriously, don’t waste your time on this now. You’ve just finished freshman year. It’s tough to chance someone who still has over 2 years to go before college applications.

I am a rising junior. I know it is still a little early, but I figured I should know what I am doing for college so I can focus myself this year. Also, I don’t know how much this matters, but our school has only two clubs that compete in events (model un and speech and debate) and, although I love to write, I do not like either one so I don’t see myself getting very involved. Do colleges see that I have limited opportunities in terms of clubs? I am starting things up, volunteering a lot, and applying for an internship soon, could this be considered strong, as the town I’m in doesn’t seem to offer very much things?

Yo I think you have a good shot at your reaches if you do indeed get a 2200+ sat and reach leadership positions in some of those clubs you have listed. Your community service is definitely a highlight of your application. Keep doing what you doing.

Columbia - low reach
Brown - high match/low reach
Princeton- mid reach
Tufts- in
UVA- in
Williams - in

just make sure to get above a 1800 on your sat lol.

Wow! You are one of the more well-rounded applicants that I have seen, you have great chances at all of these schools!

It’s hard to say without your SAT/ACT scores, but you have a pretty good shot. My concern is that while you are well rounded, as neoreo said, you don’t appear to have a clear cut focus. Unless I completely missed it, which is very possible!

Anyways, best of luck, and thanks for the chance :)

I’m trying to focus in on premed or pre dentistry. So I am starting a science club helping at a dentists office and hospital and either doing a hospital internship or a internship at a research facility.

Columbia-high match
Brown-high match
Princeton-high reach
Tufts-don’t know
UVA-match
Williams-don’t know
NYU-high match

I can’t give you full confidence because you haven’t had your junior year yet but you’re on a great track! Good luck!

If you’re a rising junior, be sure to take advantage of the opportunities and courses that open up. There’s really little bearing on your “chances” at this point in high school because a LOT can (and probably will) change your junior year. There’s the objective stuff like test scores and grades, but there are the other opportunities that you can shoot for in terms of ECs, awards, etc. What you do your junior year will be a big part of your chances at this time of year next year…not just because junior year is one of the most important parts of your high school career academically, but because many students often do a lot more things and discover a lot more about themselves junior year - at least in the case of my friends and me.

And while test scores and grades aren’t the only part of your app, they are very important and will be a big part of what schools you apply to. Shoot as high as you can, but don’t be obsessive and take the ACT/SAT a billion times.

you should get into Uva and Princeton. If i was you i would apply to havard lol. chance me?

The ivies are a reach for everyone. UVA is going to be hard given the fact that you are OOS. Also, your PSAT is low for the top schools you are looking at. Do some studying. The PSAT isn’t too accurate at predicting SAT scores.

The PSAT was bac about a year ago as a practice. I am scoring much higher now, so yeah it isn’t a very acurate indicator. Lol.
