Rejected Northwestern ED, Deferred University of Chicago EA. Chances?

Honestly, I would say Cornell CAS would be a reach for you given your SAT/ACT score, but you never know…

Very hard to rate your chances.

Your grades are clearly exceptional. However, your SAT-CR is rather low.

I think all one can really do is apply.

I never do well on those SAT/ACT tests - I have the worst anxiety. But on AP tests, school tests… give me a test on Multivariable Calc and Linear/Abstract Algebra and see what i’ll do  But Honestly nothing on my app will communicate my knowledge of economics/math as I have covered AP econ material by myself and most of the intermediate levels of macro/micro/econometrics (from a economics binge in a few weeks - I wish I had done this sooner :frowning: ) I have some major competitions in feb, how can I communicate those results if possible?

Raichu,

Cornell looks like a reach due to your SATs and also because they have already filled almost 40% of its class via ED. Given your strong grades and nice AP scores, why not try NYU, which allows three AP scores to replace grades and has a very strong economics department.

I do not receive financial aid, so I am VERY SELECTIVE of the colleges that I apply to and willing to pay full sticker price for only a few top schools. I have considered NYU, but I do not believe that it is ranked high enough overall to be worth the 50k tuition.

With your SAT / ACT score your chances are slim.

Hard to judge. Your cumulative SAT score doesn’t by any means put you out of the running, but it’s because you compensate your terrible CR score (by elite university standards) with decent math/writing scores, which aren’t amazing, but certainly in range. CR>>>Writing.

I assume you are applying to a lot of top schools (if not, you should). I’m sure at least a couple will overlook the CR score and give you a chance based on your excellent GPA and ECs. Which one(s), no one knows.

Keep in mind, undergrad Economics is basically the same at most schools and it depends what you want to do with it. If you want to go further, it’s your grad school that will really matter. UChicago probably provides the only truly distinguished undergrad Econ program (in terms of rigor, requirements, and courses offered), and you were deferred there.

Good luck!

dude, sorry, but for us Asians, we need like perfect scores. There are sooooo many asians out there who have perfect scores, and if your scores are not as near, then I think your chances are pretty slim.

I highly recommend you don’t drop 50k a year on college tuition just to study Economics. I wouldn’t drop 200k on college tuition even if it was Harvard. If you can’t get fin aid, try to go to cheap in-state school or get merit scholarship somewhere.

Edit: regarding your chances for Cornell, your chances don’t look too promising. Honestly, you won’t get into Cornell with those SAT scores unless you are black or hispanic.

I can’t be the deciding factor on your chances, but to be competitive for the College of Arts and Sciences, you would need a minimum of 630 on each section and you don’t have that on critical reading.

Let’s get this clear:

You’re ranked within the top 2% of your high school, your SAT score is above average (maybe not for CC, but certainly in general), and it’s not that “no college” will take you, it’s more that you don’t want to go to the ones that you’d be sure would take you. So, just go ahead and put in those applications for the ones you’d want to go to, and then fill out a couple more for ones you’d have a pretty decent shot of getting into, and wouldn’t mind going to. (Seriously, find those ones. You’ll stress a lot less, and you’ll be happier no matter what.)

Having recently gone through the ED thread, I would put your chances at around 1%; there seem to be no miraculous cases where someone with below 2100 has been accepted (except one case) who is not a URM or a recruited athlete. Don’t underestimate Cornell we’re an Ivy League institution.

Also, class rank imo means nothing, I was salutorian only because my HS was crap.

Your SAT scores are definitely going to hurt, but I wouldn’t say you have no chance at all.

Agreed. anyone who is not black or hispanic yet applies to an Ivy college with sub 2000 SAT will be dinged outright automatically in a matter of seconds.
