Chances for Dartmouth, Brown?

My older brother goes to Dartmouth, but it's the only school he got into, other than UNC Chapel-Hill and UF. Ergo, if I don't somehow manage to get into Dartmouth or Brown, I'm going to UF with the same people I've known since middle school. I'd really like a change for college.

Applying to: HYP (ridiculous reach, I know), Dartmouth and Brown (reach), Boston University (match), UNC-Chapel Hill (match? I know the OOS odds are bad), UF (safety).

Demographics:
Female
Public School (2000ish kids), FL: School is poor, has always been poor, and has sent on 4 students in the past 15 years to an Ivy League School (2 in the past 2 years, though!)
It's actually quite literally in the middle of a cow pasture.
Citizenship: Dual South African-US Citizenship. Moved to America at age 5. I speak Afrikaans, English, and I'm still learning Spanish.

Tests:
GPA: 4.0 unweighted, 4.7something weighted (Number 1 out of 510)
PSAT: 214 (National Merit Semifinalist)
ACT: 35 (English 36, Math 33, Reading 36, Science 34, Essay 10)

SAT: 2090 first time. Okay, this was a total mess. When I got my score sheet back, it said I'd omitted nine reading questions, and I didn't omit any. There were also discrepancies on the math and writing, so I filed for a manual rescore. The College Board said I "filled in the bubbles incorrectly". I know how to fill in bubbles, so... I'm not really sure what happened with this. Anyway, I'm taking it again in October, and hopefully I'll score higher.

SAT II: Haven't taken yet, I'm taking Math II, Chemistry, and World History. Probably decent but not stellar, I'm not that great at math.
APs: 4 World History, 5 Art History, 5 English Language and Composition
IB Scores: 7 SL Chemistry (yay!)

I'm taking all IB classes.

ECs: I'm too scared to fill this out on the CommonApp.

Probably in for Dmouth if you apply ED having your brother go there and considering your stats.

CHILL OUT
improve those SATs and you can get into HYP if your essay is good enough

Agreed with both of the above.
Plus, you’re African – bonus points!
Submit your ACT, not your SAT (ACT is farrr better).

Hey, I’m in the same boat as you! If i don’t get into my dream school, I’ll be going to UF with ppl I’ve known since elementary school. Plus, I already live in gainesville…anyways, I have a strong feeling that you’ll get into Dartmouth, Brown, UNC and UF. For HYP, I feel that you have a solid shot but just make sure that your essays and recs are stellar.

PS. isn’t the IB program ridiculous? I feel like I’m overprepared for college

I would apply to Dartmouth ED.

I’m w/ wags…Chill out! I had to scroll down forever when trying to zip past all those awards and ECs. Are you that competitive that the ONLY schools you’re considering is the ones where your brother also got in? I was thinking you wanted to apply ED, but When are you going to redo those tests? Truth is, 1) you already have a great ACT test, so skip redoing the SAT I. Get in some SAT IIs in October. and 2) you’ll probably get in. Your brother goes there, and I’m sure that’ll help. You’ve got great stats.

I second hmom5 = Dartmouth ED.

hyorilover- I know! I mean, UF is a great school, but… there are 50,000 people on campus! Everyone from my town goes there.

IB is ridiculous… I always bond with fellow IBers just so we can swap horror stories.
Doing IB stuff on top of applying to college is a pain, though. At least I have all my CAS hours done. :)

limabeans- Haha, I do need to chill a bit,but I’m not competitive with my brother at all. We’re best friends! Plus, I’m considering some schools that he hates (Brown and BU) and not considering others that he adored (U Chicago, what?)

Looking at my list, though, the only school I see no good reason for me to apply to is UNC-Chapel Hill, because they don’t have great financial aid. Basically, even if I do get into a college without an endowment, like BU, but don’t get scholarships, I’m not going to be able to afford it.

Question for all about Dartmouth ED: I thought that was when all the athletes got in? My friend is being recruited for football, and they told him to apply ED. Won’t non-athletes just get pushed out of the pool?

That you are a sib, a val and have strong scores, you would most probably be seen favorably in the ED pool. There is a little room for the unhooked and you have a tip factor (sib), it would be a good way to show Dartmouth the love.

My DS got into Dartmouth ED without a hook or tip, but very strong stats. That’s who they take ED other than the hooked–those they may lose to HYPSBC during the RD round.
