Chances for Dartmouth, Cornell, UCLA, UVA, and Notre Dame? I WILL CHANCE BACK FOR SURE!

Hi guys, so I posted one of these a few weeks ago, but several things have been added, and I didn't get much feedback the first time. Detailed responses on my chances as of now would be greatly appreciated as well as advice on what to work on going into my senior year. Thanks! Here is everything.

High School Junior
ACT: 32 (taking again one more time)
SAT: 2190 (790 critical reading, 690 math, 710 writing) - I plan to take two more times to get the math and writing up
GPA: 3.75 (school has a weird scale so this is my best estimate), upward trend of improvement since freshman year started at around a 3.5

EC's:

-Community service in Tennessee over the past 5 summers, total of around 150 hours, will be senior member this summer
-Writer for the school newspaper, will be a featured columnist next year
-2 year varsity soccer player,
-2 years varsity track
-Business Club member

Awards:
-3rd place, school-wide Modern World History research paper contest
-Recieved a perfect score on juniorl writing exam (one of only 8 out of 114 juniors to get this, it's a big deal at my school)
-one of 12 Caterham scholars selected to travel to a boarding school in England this summer to take classes
-National Merit Semifinalist
.

I would definitely try to get those two SAT scores up, but they’re pretty good as of now. For the higher schools like Dartmouth and Cornell, you should try to get them as high as possible, like maybe 33 or 34 on ACTs. I think you’re on the right track but you might want to try expanding your horizons a little bit, as you don’t have too many ECs. Maybe try starting your own club or something. Make sure when you write your essays you make them really strong to make up for some areas. I would say Dartmouth and Cornell are reaches, UVA and Notre Dame are low reaches/high matches, and UCLA is a match.
Chance me back please!

You should get into 1 of UVA, UCLA, and Notre Dame
Ivies are reach
Your EC’s are not spectacular, were you a captain for the sports teams? (That helps a lot)
chance back

I am not a captain unfortunately. I am actually looking into starting a club, although I have several different interests, so I haven’t figured out which one I would base a club off of. I have also had work published in my school’s literary publication, and am into writing. I may apply to write for Bleacher Report this summer, but we will see how that goes.

Your GPA does restrict you a bit so that is a bit of an issue (what AP classes have you taken?) but your SAT does bring it up a bit and if you can bring it up to a 2200-2300 then you will be set and your ACT scores is the same deal. Your ec’s are very diverse which is good so that will help you. Dartmouth, Cornell, UCLA, UVA, and Notre Dame

So Dartmouth and UCLA are both high reaches and it’s not so much your personal resume but it’s difficult for any kid to get into an Ivy like Dartmouth and UCLA is one of the best public schools in the country which makes it difficult enough for an in-state kid let alone an out of state kid (I’m assuming you are from Tennessee) Cornell and UVA are low reaches, possibly matches. And I’d say Notre Dame is your “safety” out of all of them. I’d also recommend applying to Vanderbilt considering you are in-state and some other local schools (Georgia, U. Of Tennessee, etc…) just to have some definite safety schools.

Haha I’m actually from Ohio, I probably should have mentioned that. I’m currently taking AP Gov and AP US History. Next year I plan to take AP Econ, AP Spanish, AP English, AP Calc AB and AP Environmental. I’m not actually a huge fan of any Ohio schools, so right now my “safeties” are Colgate and Bucknell… I should probably look into more safety schools though. Thanks for the detailed response!

Might look at Holy Cross-top25 LAC 1 hour from Boston. HC HAS GOOD COMBINATION OF academics and sports.

Also, since I forgot to post:
Junior Course load:
AP US
AP Gov
Honors Chem
Honors Precalc
Honors Spanish 3
English 3 (no advanced english offered till senior year)

Senior year expected course load:
AP Calc AB
AP Econ (which is also what I’m considering majoring in)
AP English 4
AP Spanish 4
AP Environmental

bump

bumo

bumpppp

hey man,
your ECs are good but not that great, and your GPA and ACT/SAT are both on the low side for schools like Darthmouth and Cornell. To be completely honest I think Darthmouth Cornell and possibly UCLA are reaches, though I think you could maybe get into one of them with a good enough essay/letter/etc. I think you should look for more match/safety level schools since the schools you have listed are tough and not guaranteed by any means.

Good luck and keep it up!

thanks! any recommendations for possible safety schools?

bump

Your EC’s are alright but nothing is standing out too much. Your SAT score and ACT score is perfect for the non ivies but the ivies are both reaches (they are reaches for everyone basically). I’d say it’s a match/high match for the non ivies and reaches for the ivies

Thanks!

Pretty much what everyone else already said to be honest. Being president of your own club would definitely help improve the overall look of your ECs. Your SAT and ACT scores are fine – I’d recommend retaking them once more though for those ivies. Remember that for the Ivies your essays have to be spectacular so don’t half-a** them. Good luck! :-)

thanks! retook the SAT today, so hopefully that goes well

Colleges love to see community service, which you definitely have, and it’s great that you have stood out in writing contests. If you’re planning to be a Literature or English major, that would definitely help you. I would work on getting the Math score on your SAT up a little for Dartmouth and Cornell.

Dartmouth - Slight Reach
Cornell - Slight Reach
UCLA - Low Match
UVA - Low Match
Notre Dame - Low Match

wow thanks! haha definitely the most positive chances by far… I’ve always been really into business, and economics, but I’m widely considered to be one of the top 3 writers in my class, which has led me to consider perhaps a career in journalism somehow relating to business/econ…I’m attempting to become the first two time awarded person in school history in the writing contest this year, because people tend to be too lazy to enter a second time when its not required :P
