Chances for Emory, GA Tech, University of Michigan

What are my son’s chances? He’s a rising senior. He is interested in GA Tech/Michigan, Industrial Engineering and Emory business. He will graduate High School with an AP Capstone Diploma. I’m not sure how his AP courses are weighted, but his school weighted GPA is 4.23 and unweighted is 3.76. He will graduate with 9 AP credits, and the remainder of his courses are Honors. Next year he’s taking AP Calc BC, AP World History, AP Capstone, and another AP but I don’t remember which course. AP exam scores are generally low. Will that have an impact? Do I have to turn them in?

HUG- 3
US History- 4
Calc- 5
Physics- 3
Capstone Seminar - 3

His best composite ACT is 32, and if super scored 34. GA Tech super scores. Here are his scores from his 2 ACT tests:
English 28/31 , Math 34/35, Reading, 30/34, Science 33/29 Combined English/Writing 28/29- writing 10/12 and 8/12, composite 31/32.

He has a 740 in Math 1 and 710 Math 2 SAT Subject Test. His highest level math course will be Calc BC.

He will be applying out of state. Extra curricular activities include overseas medical mission work (3 summers), competitive chess player (95th percentile in Junior level ), piano, HOBY (leadership) participant, varsity lacrosse player, participant in Economics For Leaders, University of Texas, summer 2015.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and any insight offered!

Most schools don’t superstore ACT, but I think he can get into all of the schools with a killer essay.

UMich for sure does not superscore ACT, however, they will look for the higher Math section score if you submit multiple test scores. Anyway, your higher Math section score also goes with the higher composite. For UMich, GPA is the most critical factor and the admission average for CoE has been 3.9. GPA 3.76 is on the low side near the 25th percentile. The mid 50 ACT for CoE has been 31-34 in the last few years but I don’t have the number for this year yet. It is likely to be the same or higher this year as the mid 50 for enrolled freshmen is 31-34 already. The admission average ACT last year was 33. So with both GPA and ACT below admission average from OOS, with OOS admission rate below 20% (the CoE overall admission rate last year was 25%), it would be a reach.
.

I forgot to mention he has three generations of Michigan Alum., and also attended the prestigious Interlochen camp for five consecutive years.

So he is from Michigan? In state with legacy would definitely help. However, he should still try to improve the score (and GPA if possible). I know an in state student with 3.8 GPA 33 ACT got rejected from CoE this year. They consider GPA as the most important factor.

No, he is out of state. Thanks!
