Chances for Engineering at UT - Austin and A&M

I'm interested in petroleum and chemical engineering. Since I'm in Texas these are the top two schools for these two majors.

Junior @ highly ranked public high school.
Non-ranking high school but I'm in the top 20% of a class of about 850.

UW GPA: 3.86
W GPA: 5.05

ACT
Composite: 31
Math: 35
English: 33
Science: 30
Reading:28

I'm taking again next week hoping to raise it a point or two.

Course rigor has increased each year along with my GPA. Upward trend.
Several pre-AP and AP classes.

National Honor Society 10,11,12
Football,Baseball,Lacrosse

Plenty of Community Service hours and leader of 2 community groups and fundraisers.
Worked at local business junior year and probably will my senior year.

What are my chances of getting accepted in to Texas, which is my first choice, or A&M?

(If anyone has other suggestions about Petroleum or chemical engineering please let me know!)

Unless something changes next year you won’t get into petroleum or chemical unless you’re a woman or a minority. With that ranking you may not even get into the University at all.

TAMU comes on a first come first server basis. They just give the engineering seats to whoever comes first. CHEM ENG fills up REALLY FAST, so APPLY AS FREAKING EARLY AS YOU POSSIBLY CAN.

I was talking about UT Austin in my first paragraph

asianandproud - Thanks for your feedback. I agree that being a a female or minority is a big a benefit for admissions. But obviously that is something I can’t control!

Attending a large highly competitive high school has both benefits and drawbacks.

Making the top 10% (which only 7% are auto-admit next year at UT) is difficult. The differences in GPA from top 10% to 15% is a small fraction of a point. But since my school doesn’t rank I can only estimate where I fall in the rankings. Counselors won’t/can’t tell me anything.

True I’m not the top 7% auto-admit but with the auto-admit percentage getting smaller then the bottom 3% of the 10% now have to compete with the high performing non auto-admits from other schools. You would think that would give people like me a better chance since my stats will be better than many of that 3% group who are no longer auto-admit.

But stats aren’t everything to UT who has the holistic view of applicants.

All I can do is my best and hope for the best.

Does anyone want to chance me?

<sigh></sigh>

while we’re here id like to ask some of your opinions,

i got accepted to Tech
and tamuk for petroleum/natural gas enginering (with a major scholarship)

i applied to UT as a cola because i didnt think id get in the engineerig as an external

should I go for one of the previous or go to UT if I get accepted

Also, if I go to UT I’d have to take an extra year since I can’t tranfer until I complete 24 hours. If I go Tamuk I can start my major courses in the Fall and grad by 2015/2016.

Im kinda stumped about what to do

plus like petroleum engineering isn’t the easiest major to get into
