What are my chances at:

MIT
Stanford
Cornell
Rice
Northwestern

I have safety schools where I am assured admittance.

What are the biggest problems with my application and how could I remedy them in the following year?

Is it worth applying to HYPSM given mediocre ECs?

Take SAT subject tests, also for MIT really try and see if you can get an 800 on Math, it will really help. And yes apply to HYPSM, whats the worst that could happen?

I think you will be OK for Northwestern. We sent about 9-10 students there, 3 with full-rides, the others with 50% and ^. The full riders had 4.0 UW, 33-36 ACTS, and half and + had 3.8-3.9 and 30-33 ACTS.

I’d say you actually have a decent chance at all of those excluding Stanford(crapshoot).

I think you were confusing it with Northeastern. Northwestern does not give merit-based scholarships.

UPDATE: Some posters had suggested that I add my subject test scores to get better feedback, and they came out this week.

Math II: 800
Physics: 780

Biggest problem is definitely your ECs. Try taking up an internship in a university lab to show that you’re keen into engineering/medicine. Perhaps you can try applying to Caltech as an alternative to MIT as well, since they’re equally famous for science and engineering and they have a very good medical scholars program.
Good advice so far, keep it coming

Your nearly flawless SAT score + decent GPA will give you a great shot most places… nationally competitive debater looks good too.
I’d say good shot at Rice, NWestern & Cornell. Stanford & MIT = reaches for anyone but you have a solid foundation so I’d say you have a shot.
good luck :)
