Chances for Fordham? (plus others)

This is a re-post, slightly edited due to changing plans and interests.

I go to a tiny school that offers very little to impress a good university. One year of foreign language, no extracurriculars, etc. I've taken the hardest subjects possible. My family is low income. I have a lot going against me, but I've always been a dedicated student.

I will be applying to Fordham, CUNY Hunter Honors, and Eugene Lang College. I am not from New York but I have friends in the area.

My stats (by the time I apply):

GPA: 3.9uw
Expected ACT: 26-28
Expected SAT: Math: 500 range, Reading: mid 700s, Writing: mid 700s.

High School
Math: Business Math, Algebra I, Geometry
Social Studies: State History, World Geography, World History, U.S. History, Civics/Economics.
Science: Health, Nutrition Science, Biology, Physical Science, Chemistry, Physics.
English: I - IV, American Lit, British Lit.
One year of Spanish.

I also have quite a bit of "how to be a good Christian" electives because they were pushed on me or required. I don't know if that will hurt me or not. I have business and government electives, though.

Extracurriculars: Two years volunteering at the local library, two years volunteering with the Humane Society. Steady job for two years. Possible one week trip to either Ecuador for missions or another country for some sort of community service. I LOVE community service. I will have very good recommendations from the principal of my school and former employers.

I'm not happy with my stats and I understand that I'm going to have a hard time, but I'm very ambitious and I've always done well in school. Thank you for reading and assessing my chances. I appreciate it.

Nothing to be apologetic about. Your profile is somewhat unique, and I think, if explained right, and maybe used as the basis for a good essay, could be an advantage.

Of course, your SAT's are important so I would try to get better than a 500 on the Math portion. The other 2 sections, if those scores materialize, should be fine. An overall 1200 (M/V) is OK, but not great for FU, which has seen its SAT scoires rise condierably recently.

Look, you have this year to improve your app and get the best possible ACT and SAT scores that you can. The ACT score, if at the 28 side of the range is pretty good and should be enough to get you in.

Just make sure your essay shows who you are and why your are different/unique, and addresses in a positive way some of the challenges you have faced.

Good luck. FU is a great school, and I think you have a good shot at getting in.

Thank you for your response! I may or may not take the SAT. I'm pretty confident that my ACT score will be better than the SAT score, so I'm going to take the ACT first...we'll see, I guess.

I hate bumping these threads...

<3 Fordham.

Have you taken SAT IIs? Try to get that Math up to at least 600 or 650, ideally.
If you're from a low income family, are you sure you'll be able to afford Fordham?
Do you think you'll be able to qualify for federal grants?
If not, then your family might struggle quite a bit.

I'm expecting to have to take out a lot of loans. Why?

I may be able to take an SAT II in Literature, but everything else is a bit sketchy. Some people on various Fordham/NYU/etc. sites have told me that they were low income when they applied, and have been able to finance their education through loans. I've been told countless times to go to the best college I can get into, regardless of cost, so that's what I'm doing.

If you can bring your math score into the 600's, I think you will have a good chance of being admitted to Fordham. If finances are a concern, Fordham gives out 6,000 to any student who chooses to commute from his or her home/off campus housing. The other two schools you listed should be shoe-ins for you.

Hope this helped!
