My chances?

I go to a tiny school that offers very little to impress a good university. One year of foreign language, no extracurriculars, etc. I've taken the hardest subjects possible. My family is low income. I have a lot going against me, but I've always been a dedicated student.

I will be applying to Fordham, SUNY Stony Brook, SUNY New Paltz, CUNY Hunter, and Eugene Lang College. I am not from New York but I have friends in the area.

My stats (by the time I apply):

GPA: 3.9uw
Expected ACT: 26-28
Expected SAT: Math: 500 range, Reading: mid 700s, Writing: mid 700s.

High School
Math: Business Math, Algebra I, Geometry
Social Studies: State History, World Geography, World History, U.S. History, Civics/Economics.
Science: Health, Nutrition Science, Biology, Physical Science, Chemistry, Physics.
English: I - IV, American Lit, British Lit.
One year of Spanish.
I also have quite a bit of "how to be a good Christian" electives because they were pushed on me or required. I don't know if that will hurt me or not. I have business and government electives, though.

Extracurriculars: Two years volunteering at the local library, two years volunteering with the Humane Society, a mission trip to Ecuador in my senior year. Steady job for two years, and I will hopefully have served three years with Americorps by the time I apply. I will have very good recommendations from the principal of my school and former employers.

I'm not happy with my stats and I understand that I'm going to have a hard time, but I'm very ambitious and I've always done well in school. Thank you for reading and assessing my chances. I appreciate it.

Hey,

I don't think you have a bad chance at all. Show your personality in your essays and explain the circumstances that may have kept you from having higher qualifications.

Don't count yourself out--really. Put everything you can in your app, and I'm sure you'll get into where you want to!

Take care!

you have a very good chance, however why are you apply out of your state?

For several reasons.

Our state schools aren't great, and are in rural locations.

There aren't many jobs (for what I want to go into) here, and the pay would be much less.

Internship opportunities aren't as good around the state schools.

I love the New York area and know people there.

I've thought it out. :)

I can't believe you guys actually think I have a chance! I expected lots of responses about community colleges...

Looks like you should be in pretty good shape with Stony Brook. Have you visited us?

Chris

Yes you definitely stand a chance.

"I can't believe you guys actually think I have a chance!"

I can't believe you think you don't have chance! :)

"Looks like you should be in pretty good shape with Stony Brook. Have you visited us?"

No, but I might be visiting in October. Stony Brook really isn't my first choice, as I would rather be in the city, but I'm definitely considering them (you!).

Now...if I don't go on the mission trip to Ecuador (I don't know if I'll be able to or not) will that affect my chances much?

Not with us, really. Ultimately, it's about your academics first, everything else second.

Well, I hope you consider us further! We're only a train ride away from NYC. See you in October.

Chris

Bumping this.

I think you have a good shot at all the state schools....
