should be great essays, he's a fantastic writer

he wants to know if he should bother applying

That is a pretty unimpressive GPA in light of the SAT scores, and what happened on the Physics AP?
Not sure there’s enough information here to assess.
Clearly it’s a reach, but I tend to think that if a student really wants to go to a school s/he should take the shot, as long as s/he has a good list of core and likely schools on the application list.

To be fair on the physics, I had a 4.0 in AP physics, but since I didn’t know calculus yet got a 2 on the AP. The lone mar on my AP record! (Well that and Latin, but there were mitigating cicumstances…)

3.34 is not going to be impressive as I’m sure you know but the best he can do is to apply and see what happens. what are his ECs?

i know he’s been in academic decathlon for quite a while…either freshman or sophomore year, but that’s all i know. what do you think his chances are with that gpa though?

it’s going to be low for sure. usually, people with the lower gpas who get in (~3.6 uw) have phenomenal ECs to overcome it and/or go to an unusually hard school (e.g. NE prep school).
