So my latest task for college is to find some safety schools that I would be happy at. My only safety right now is UMass Amherst, which I really don't want to go to but it's my only real safety at the moment. I stumbled across FSU and I really like what I'm seeing so far, would I be wrong to consider it a safety?

My stats...
17 white Catholic female from MA suburbs
Ranked approx. 4th in class of 200-ish
4.09 GPA
2040 SAT at the moment, retaking in Oct. - 700 CR, 640 M, 700 W
Took 3 AP's junior year, Bio, US History and Psych
Taking 3 this year, Chem, Spanish Language & English Lit (would have taken Calc but didn't fit with schedule)
Taken all honors courses throughout high school when available (only juniors & seniors can take AP's here) with the exception of a few CP electives

ECs:
Competitive dancer, varsity volleyball captain, varsity lacrosse, Student Council, Model UN, choreographer for school dance show, Book Club founder, Habitat for Humanity town LPC & leader of new HFH club at school

Volunteer:
Habitat for Humanity, rebuilt dorms at school for mentally retarded, volunteer at local hospital & natural science center

Any chances of getting in here? I'd like to add it to my "safety school" list if at all possible. Thank you!

Your stats look strong. Your extracurriculars show a variety of interests and leadership. I would check the link that sunnyflorida posted earlier that will assist you in recalculating your GPA into the FSU weighted GPA scale. That will give a better indication of the strength of your application/transcript.

Please refer to the advice given earlier on Chances (WishWash) thread concerning OOS applicants. I am curious to see where your FSU weighted GPA falls and what your new SAT score will be.

on the surface, it would appear that based upon your profile, FSU would be a safety. HOWEVER, being from oos, places you in a different category (more selective). We also, do not know what impact the jump in stats from last year, combined with two admissions cycles this year rather than three in years past will have on the admissions process.

One thing that has not changed is that you certainly elevate your chances of gaining admission by applying during the first admission deadline.

As always, do not rely only on the advice you receive from these boards. We always recommend that you five the admissions department a call and review your stats with them. they will give you the best gauge of what your chances are.

If she is retaking the SAT in October (well after FSU's first round October 10th cut-off date), do you think there is still time for her to apply the October 25th SAT results to her application, say, if she applies prior to the 10th?

my oos S had two friends oos ---who were both rejected with similiar scores. they applied in later rounds i think jan 08. i agree with other posters match not safety and apply as early as possible.

You guys that act like FSU is the next public ivy crack me up.

I know a kid that got in OOS from Colorado last year that had a 3.6 weighted (FSU scale) and an 1140 SAT. However, admissions have probably gotten a tad bit stiffer this year than in the past. I wouldn't call FSU a safety for you, however, it's a match. Good luck.

That information surprises me a bit. Perhaps your friend applied during the first admission cycle, before FSU announced that they were cutting freshman enrollment by 1,000 students. I think what we are saying is that while FSU is no Ivy League school, it did get much more competitive with its admissions standards last year and that this is expected to continue this year. Its not to say that admissions standards at all schools are on the rise in recent years. As a parent of an oos student whose son had two friends rejected last year from FSU with SAT scores over 1300, I would consider your friend fortunate to have gained admission. Did your friend end up going to FSU? If not where did he/she go?
As always, it is best for prospective students to give the admissions department at fsu a call and have them evaluate your chances. We are merely here to offer our opinions and guidance as best we can. I would be surprised if ElizaB didnt get in based upon her stats, but the rules that apply to oos students can vary quite a bit.
I hope ElizaB gets in and decides to go to fsu. Our s loves it so far and has adjusted really well. For him, it has turned out to be the right place.

I'm not sure what cycle he applied during, but he did end up going to FSU. I know admissions are getting quite strict due to the cutbacks, but it just seems that some (understandable) bias pops up every now and then. It'll be very interesting to see if the original poster gets in or not.....
