Chances for good schools? I'll chance back

Basics: White male
School: Very large public school in suburban NJ (2200 students)
Rank: School doesn't rank but I'm probably about the 85th-90th percentile
GPA: School goes on 0-100 scale, currently 95.1 W
Probable major: Poli Sci

SAT: March '09- 2040 (680 CR/740 M/620 W, 8 essay)
May '09- 2210 (750 CR/660 M/800 W, 9 essay)
Superscore is 2290 (750 CR/740 M/800 W, 9 essay)

SAT II: June '09; Lit: 730, Math I: 710..taking US History in September or October

EC: Roughly 100 hours at a local retirement home...2 years on school newspaper staff...3 years on undefeated conference champion Quiz Bowl team

Work: Umpire for local youth baseball league...counselor in training at overnight camp

AP: 5 on English Lang

Senior schedule: AP English Lit, AP Psych, AP Macro, AP US Gov, Pre-Calc, TBD business course

Summers: Summer before junior year at overnight camp as counselor in training...summer before senior year at BU High School Honors Program taking 2 classes for credit

Other: NMS semi-finalist, likely to be finalist
Journalism Student of the Year for my school as a sophomore

-anticipating great recs from English and History teachers
-good rec from head of volunteers at the retirement home
-good counselor rec
-will have great essays

Legacies: Uncle graduated from Johns Hopkins Phi Beta Kappa...he is still involved with many alumni things.
Cousin graduated GW in 2001 and is also very involved (she conducts student interviews on the West Coast).

For the BU summer program I earned a B in Religion and Culture and a B+ in Intro to Poli Sci...with BU's notorious grade deflation I'd say this would look good for my application.

Overall, what are my chances for BU, GW, American, Johns Hopkins, University of Maryland, Brown, and Northwestern?

BU - match
GW - tougher match
American - safety
Johns Hopkins - low reach
Brown - high reach
Northwestern - mid reach

Chance back please :D

use score choice and only show your top sat scores! also work on those extracurriculars, they aren’t that impressive!

BU - freakin’ safety dear, I know the stupidest people that got in there. Their applications weren’t even half as impressive as yours and they applied for financial aid too.

GW - you’ll get in fine. safety.

American - not familiar with this school

Johns Hopkins - work on your extracurriculars, reach, but not too hard to reach ;)

University of Maryland - are you kidding me? SAFETY!

Brown - super reach. your application doesn’t stand out enough- that’s why you need to show yourself through extra curriculars

Northwestern - edit: wait, sorry, I got confused. Again same with brown- just spice up those ecs!

Check with the schools to see if an uncle or cousin makes you at legacy, it does not at most.

I was thinking the same thing but seeing as they’re still involved with the school that may help my chances a little bit.

Based on the information you provided us with, I would say:
BU - match
GW - high match
American - match
Johns Hopkins - low reach
Brown - high/mid reach
Northwestern -low reach

Best of luck!:)

BU - safety
GW - safety
American - super safety
Hopkins - low reach
Brown - high reach
Northwestern - reach

I don’t think you hae a match in there, why don’t you look at a school like W&M or Georgetown.

I’m not interested in W & M because if at all possible I’d like to be roughly in the DC area.

BU - safety

American - low match
Johns Hopkins - mid reach
Brown - high or mid reach

I agree with above posts, your EC’s are really hurting you… not just because their minimal, but I would have no idea what interests you if I was on admissions staff
Everything else looks ok though.
