Hopkins ED? I'll chance back!

Basics: White male, suburban, Jewish
School: Very large, pretty competitive (8-12 Ivies per year) public school in suburban NJ (2200 students)
Rank: School doesn't rank but I'm probably about the 85th percentile
GPA: School goes on 0-100 scale, currently 95.3 W
Probable major: Poli Sci

SAT: March '09- 2040 (680 CR/740 M/620 W, 8 essay)
May '09- 2210 (750 CR/660 M/800 W, 9 essay)
Superscore is 2290 (750 CR/740 M/800 W, 9 essay)

SAT II: June '09; Lit: 730, Math I: 710

EC: 140 hours volunteering at a local retirement home...2 years on school newspaper staff...3 years on undefeated conference champion Quiz Bowl team

Work: Umpire for local youth baseball league...counselor in training at overnight camp

AP: 5 on English Lang...school doesn't offer any APs to sophomores and very few to juniors

Senior schedule: AP English Lit, AP Psych, AP Macro, AP US Gov, Pre-Calc, Culinary Arts

Summers: Summer before junior year at overnight camp as counselor in training...summer before senior year at BU High School Honors Program taking 2 classes for credit

Other: NMS Commended Student
Journalism Student of the Year for my school as a sophomore

-great rec from History teacher, good rec from English teacher
-good rec from head of volunteers at the retirement home
-good counselor rec
-great essays

Legacies: Uncle graduated from Johns Hopkins Phi Beta Kappa

For the BU summer program I earned a B in Religion and Culture and a B+ in Intro to Poli Sci...with BU's notorious grade deflation I'd say this would look good for my application.

Overall, what are my chances for Hopkins ED?

Your numbers are good, your ECs are a bit weak. Write some killer essays and Id say youd have a really good shot.

Your SAT and GPA are fine…but you do not have special ECs to impress admission officers… I think you should write brilliant essays

My Common App essay was excellent and my JH supplement essay was also great (I’m already a good writer but I also got some help from a professional).

Anyone else?

Need good essays + recs. Then again your scores + GPa and others are fine. EC is standard. If your major is poli-sci., given your ECs and being ED…

low match

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/807172-columbia-ucs-uop-nyu-upenn.html</a></p>

What’s your unweighted GPA?

@anonimity: 90.1…would be higher but I never got the handle of Biology and Geometry.

bumpppppppp

bbbuuummmppp

I would say its a low reach because you lack any ECs that really stand out. If anything, you should focus on passion for whatever you want to study.

Chance back?

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/804723-chances-ed-dartmouth.html</a></p>

bumpbumpbump

bumppppppp

Low reach. Your ECs and GPA are a little on the weaker side. The SAT is good, though, the SAT IIs are decent.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/804148-parents-wont-pay-cent-should-i-lower-expectations-will-chance-back.html</a></p>

I think that your stats are fine for Hopkins. However, there are plenty of people with your stats or better. That being said, I think that you should try to beef up your ECs. Don’t necessarily try to joing thousands of other clubs, just work with what you have. I’m sure the list of ECs you mentioned doesnt do justice to how much involvement you have in each of the activities. Make sure that show through in your application. If you do that, I think that you have a really good chance of getting in, especially since you’re EDing.

Chance me back?
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/810476-predictions-yale-ea-see-if-youre-right.html</a></p>

@bubblegnome- True with regards to the ECs…my common app essay was on my involvement on the Quiz Bowl team, and I included an article I wrote for the school paper in my supplemental docs (I interviewed a senior editor from the Washington Post on the future of the newspaper industry)…also I got a great rec letter from the retirement home I volunteer at that really showed the extent of my volunteering.

Anyone else?

I think you should be in Hopkins ED, they’re really lenient with the applicants in ED at least from my school.
