Chances for Harvard, Yale, Brown, Amherst, Wellesley, Tufts, BC

Hello, fellow CCers!

I'm a rising senior who's interested in my chances for Harvard SCEA, Yale, Brown, Amherst, Wellesley, Tufts, and BC (don't worry, I have safeties, too).

So without further ado...

Here are my stats:

SAT I: 2360 (760 CR, 800 M, 800 W, 11 essay), first try
SAT II: 770 US History, 760 Lit, 720 Math 2 (might retake); plan on taking Spanish with Listening this fall
Unweighted GPA: 3.97 out of 4.0
Rank: No official rank, but I estimate at least top 20 out of roughly 450 kids in my grade
AP: 5 Lit (self-studied), 5 APUSH

Besides a couple AP classes, my school doesn't let you take AP classes until senior year (unless you are somehow ahead of everyone else, like if you have taken outside courses or have moved from a different school). It's rare for someone at my school to take many AP classes, just because honors classes tend to be just as rigorous as AP, and most students are busy with extracurriculars.

Senior Year Course Load:[ul]
[] AP BC Calc
[] AP Chem
[] AP Spanish
[] Honors Euro Lit (hardest English class at my school; there's no AP English class)
[] Unleveled alternative math class (just an interesting elective I wanted to try; you learn about math and how it applies to the real world, music, art, etc; taught my junior year math teacher who I LOVE)
[] Advanced Modern/Jazz Dance
[/ul]
Major Awards:[ul]
[] Princeton Book Award (only recipient in my school)
[] National Spanish Exam medalist (grade 8: gold, grade 9: silver, grade 10: silver, grade 11: bronze)
[] Likely National Merit Semifinalist/Finalist (PSAT score was 234)
[] Likely National Honors Society inductee
[/ul]
Extracurriculars:[ul]
[] Dance (since grade 9)
[] Member of Legislature and Student Council (elected by students, grades 9-11), probably will get elected next year too; co-chair of Student Council (elected by students, grades 10-11)
[] Trumpet (since 4th grade)
[] Concert band (grades 10-12); member of the band board (appointed by the band conductor, grade 12)
[/ul]
Volunteer/Community Service:[ul]
[] Coach at school's writing center (appointed by English teacher, very selective program, grade 12)
[] Math tutor at local elementary school (grades 10-12)
[] Mentor in advisory program for underclassmen (selective program, grades 11-12)
[/ul]
Summer Activities:[ul]
[] Acting program at film academy (before grade 10)
[] Lead roles in schools' summer musicals (before grades 10 and 11)
[] Creative writing class at top university (before grade 12)
[/ul]
Job Experience:[ul]
[li] Plan on becoming a private SAT tutor in the fall, most likely with paying customers, but maybe I'll do it gratuitously, don't know yet... (I have a friend my age who's also an SAT tutor and she makes a lot of money from it, so yes, it's possible to charge customers even if you're just a high schooler and not a professional tutor) [/li][/ul]
I know these lists don't look very long, but most kids at my school only do a few extracurriculars and really dedicate themselves to them. We don't have any honor society clubs (NHS, Mu Alpha Theta, etc.), and I don't know anybody in my school who got any national awards like Intel.

Essays: I'm very confident in my writing abilities, and I have a pretty kickass idea for my essay, if I do say so myself ;)
Teacher Recommendations: My teacher recs are from my junior year English and Math classes, the two classes in which I participated the most and was always a leader in class discussions, and I have great relationships with both teachers. Because I got all A's junior year except an A- in math, my math teacher can explain that even though I struggled a bit in the middle of the year in her class (due mostly to stress over a death in the family), I'm still an extremely hard worker, a strong mathematician, etc.
Counselor Rec: My counselor has a bunch of students, so we don't have a super personal relationship, but he definitely likes me.
Supplemental Materials: I'm going to submit a short fiction sample that I wrote this summer in my creative writing class and that my professor and fellow students really loved.

Applying for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: Not 100% sure, but since I want to go into law, it might be philosophy, psychology, or English, or maybe a double major/major-minor
State: MA
School Type: Public, top-10 public high school in MA
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Female
Hooks: Kind of a legacy at some schools (mom got Master's at Tufts and PhD at Harvard, dad got Master's at BC)

Also, it may be useful to see the number of kids accepted last year from my school to the colleges I'm interested in:
[ul]
[] Harvard: 7
[] Yale: 4
[] Brown: 3
[] Amherst: 3
[] Wellesley: 2
[] Tufts: 9
[li] BC: 12[/li][/ul]
Another CCer seemed doubtful about the truth behind these numbers, especially for Harvard, but I promise these are correct; Harvard tends to favor good local schools. This gives a good idea (just FYI, my school isn't on this "estimated" list): Harvard University: Which high schools feed the most students to Harvard? - Quora

Thanks for reading this long post everyone! Please chance me and I'll chance back ASAP! :)

You seem to have a very strong application. Admissions to Ivies and Amherst is a crapshoot. Even Tufts is unpredictable. Your best chances are likely Wellesley and BC. What will likely be a key factor are the quality of your essays. My son got into BC last December and wrote such a stellar essay that his admissions reader sent him a personal note commending him.

What is it that you’re looking to study? Remember that just because a college is prestigious doesn’t mean that it will have an academic program that will be suitable for you.

Sorry, but you seem more like packaging than a genuine student. You might have over planned things a little too much.

PsychoDad10: Thanks for the feedback! I’m not really sure, but I might major in philosophy or psychology, as I plan on going to law school (knowing the tendencies of kids my age, that could definitely change :D).

sosomenza: I’m not really sure what you mean by “over planned things”… I don’t “plan” my courseload for the next year until my school’s deadline, and my ECs certainly aren’t planned; I got into high school with no idea what I wanted to do (except continue playing trumpet), and I explored everything available to me and picked what I wanted to do over time, never once thinking “will this look good to colleges?”. I’m sorry if I don’t come off as genuine, because I truly am, and I’ve never done anything in my life just for the sake of attending a prestigious school–I really don’t care what school I attend, because no matter where I go, I’ll work hard and make the most of my experience.
I hope that didn’t come off as defensive or anything. I just want to know what about my profile seems artificial or forced, because that’s never something that has crossed my mind about myself, nor has anyone ever told me that. I really appreciate the input though! :)

^Really well put…

Personally, I think you are very competitive for all of these schools (especially BC, Wellesley, and Tufts), but the ivies and Amherst are always unpredictable. Those 3 schools are all matches for you, just try to bring yourself out in your essays. If you haven’t heard of Tufts Syndrome, then don’t look it up because it’ll only discourage you. Just work on your essays and you’ll have even more of a stellar application.

Chance me? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1531519-vandy-ed.html#post16235044</a> (Read comments as well please!)

kuzon988: Thanks so much! I’m definitely not going to look that up LOL  It sounds awful already! My mom works part-time at Tufts, Harvard, and BC (forgot to mention that in my main post); hopefully that’ll help a bit…?
And I just chanced you back :o

hi http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1533018-chance-me-please-i-chance-back.html</a> please if you can :D

I’d say you have a decent chance at all of the schools you mentioned. But still a lot of people have extracurriculars on par with yours, so you need to find a way to differentiate yourself from them in essays and such.

Harvard, Yale, Brown - reach like most
Amherst, Tufts - low reach (Tufts unpredictable)
Wellesley, BC - low match

math64: Actually, I just wrote (the rough draft of) my Common App essay today, and I’m pretty proud of it, not to toot my own horn  Thanks a bunch for chancing me! I just chanced you back–congrats on being so awesome!

Apply to BC EA --that will be your best chance. You will need more safeties, maybe other women’s colleges.

nervedoctor: I already have quite a few safeties, BC being one of them. I know that sounds weird, but at my school, literally everyone (28 people) at my school who applied to BC in the last 7 years who had 2200-2360 on their SAT and 3.8-3.97 GPA has gotten admitted to BC, so it’s pretty much guaranteed I’ll get admitted, unless I really screw up something.

Agree that you will get into BC but Don’t be too haughty–your SATs and GPA are very strong but so are so many other applicants. That is only my opinion based on the past 3 years of my 2 sons’ elite prep school colleagues.

nervedoctor: Don’t worry, I’m not trying to sound arrogant or anything! I’m just saying this based on my school’s stats on Naviance. BC is one of my safeties, and I already know I’m applying to Harvard SCEA; I just want people’s opinions on my chances. Thanks for yours, I really do appreciate it :)

So I finished reading your application it took me a while, in the best way possible:) Not to sound overly optimistic or anything, but I genuinely believe that you have a great stats for any of theses schools along with interesting and impressive awards, ecs, ect. I think that BC and Wellesley are low matches, after what you mentioned above about BC possibly/probably even safeties. Amherst and Tufts are, as I’m sure you know, erratic. Even so, I think your application will be on par if not a bit above the average. The Ivies are… well the Ivies, but if I were you I wouldn’t be overly pessimistic.

*On a side note
I don’t think you seem overly planned at all. You seem like someone who does what theywant and in turn excels.

onedayhopefully: Awww thanks so much! :o :o I hope you’re right, 'cause I’d love to get into some of these schools (especially Harvard and Wellesley)! Your kind words have brightened my day–er, night :D

Bump10char

Harvard - high reach
Yale - high reach
Brown - reach/high reach
Amherst - low reach/high match
Wellesley - high match/match
Tufts - low reach/high match
BC - safety/low match

maxx12345678: Thanks! :)
