Chances for Ivies? Especially Harvard

Current high school sophomore. Taking AP Comp Sci A, AP Calc BC, Chem Honors, AP Chinese, Spanish 3, Journalism, World History/Literature, 4.6 GPA this year. 4.0 unweighted GPA, 4.4 weighted cumulative. 3rd in international science and engineering competition. Winner of Art Contest, artwork exhibited in museum. Certified piano teacher in US. Chess Master (2100 rating). SAT II scores are all 780-800. PSAT is 231. Vice President of 3 Clubs at school, will be President of 2.

Too early to tell. Keep up the good work - write some great essays. Cultivate relationships with teachers, so some have the details to write meaningful recommendations. Be sure to apply to a safety. Best of luck!

If you get a 2300+ on sat and keep that GPA and have good essays and recs. say hello to at least UPenn Cornell or brown.

Thanks for all of the responses! :)

You are on the right track. Just keep your GPA and scores up. As for EC, holding multiple VP or president position simultaneously make not look very good. You better show your dedication and passion in something instead of doing everything.

Thanks, I will keep that in mind especially now that officer apps for clubs are coming out again.

I think holding as many leadership positions as possible, even if they’re scattered, is still good. However, I do agree that you should focus in on something. But if you’re focusing in on something AND you have multiple leadership positions, then it definitely won’t hurt you. Quality over quantity, but leadership, quantity, and a few with with very deep quality will make you golden.

Can anyone come up with a list of the colleges that for me are safeties/match/low reach/high reach?

Harvard low reach. Try to get in!!!
Duke your in good shape
Brown your in good shape
Uni Penn good shape
Yale? Reach but go if you can for law
Cornell good shape

Thanks, Harvard is my dream school. I will try harder to get in.

Harvard isn’t a low reach for anyone.

Can anyone else chance me instead of commenting on others’ posts? Please?

Assuming your SAT/ACT will reflect how well you did on the PSAT, you will be a strong candidate for any ivy. The main thing you need to do is make 2 teachers love you during your junior year and get good recs from them. Also write good essays. Assuming you do this, then:

Harvard: reach
Princeton: reach
Yale: reach
Columbia:reach
Upenn (wharton): reach
Upenn (all other schools): low reach
Brown: reach/low reach
Cornell: low reach

Keep in mind that applications to ivies are a complete crapshoot unless you go to a feeder school, have legacy status, are a URM, or have accomplished something incredible. Keep your grades up, get good test scores, but most importantly find a way to make yourself stand out and be unique. Give them a reason to think that you are irreplaceable because a 4.0 gpa, 2400 SAT, and 36 ACT are replaceable.

Your junior year is the most important year for college apps so any judgement now is kind of useless, but you look like you are on the right track so far. Remake this post 1 year from now and the predictions will be much more accurate.

Ivies:
Harvard:reach
Yale:reach
Princeton: reach
Columbia: mid-reach/reach
Brown: Mid-reach
Dartmouth:mid-reach
Penn (Wharton): mid-reach/reach
Penn (CAS): low/mid reach
Cornell: low reach

Ivy equivalents:
MIT: reach
Stanford: reach
UChicago: mid-reach
Duke: low/mid-reach

You certainly have great EC’s, grades, and scores, but just keep in mind that top schools are tough to get into nowadays.

to earl to chance… and also Harvard accepts 5% of applicants. It’s either a flat-out no or a “you have a slight chance.”
