If you are applying EA, then the admissions decision will be based on the grades at the end of your junior year (unless you are deferred); so whether your grades “might go up after completing senior year” is not really relevant.
That being said, you should be competitive for EA admission as an in-state student. You might look at Section C9 of the Common Data Set will show you the median 50% for both SAT and ACT scores, as well as the percentage of the entering first-year class falling within certain ranges of SAT and ACT scores; and Part C11 gives the percentage of entering first-year students falling within a range of unweighted GPA on a 4.0 scale. This information may give you a rough idea of how, in terms of the raw numbers, you compare with previous admitted freshmen.
@gandalf78 Thanks for your valuable input. It seems that I am falling behind due to GPA as 90.24% of the admitted students are having GPA 3.75 or higher.
@Cam367: Have you met with your high school guidance counselor, so that you can come up with a plan to maximize your chances with your application? Or does your high school have Naviance (or something similar) so that you can see how you compare to other applicants from your high school? If your high school has a history of sending people to Georgia Tech, then your guidance counselor may be able to offer some insight into how and why such student(s) were successful, and give you some ideas for your application. Good luck!
@gandalf78: My high school is one of the top 10 high schools in Georgia. We do have Naviance and my school has very good records with GA Tech. Below is the acceptance history of my school:
Year 2017:
Applied : 160 Accepted : 72 Enrolled : 27
Year 2016:
Applied : 128 Accepted : 78 Enrolled : 29
Compare to other students on Naviance scattergrams, I am slightly below on grade scale but good on SAT score scale.
I will check with my counselor once school opens.
Thank you!
@Cam367: One last thought. Talk with your guidance counselor about the possibility of applying RD instead of EA, and whether it might be to your advantage, assuming that you can raise your GPA sufficiently via the AP courses that you will be taking – since the Fall Semester grades will be what are considered by the Admissions Office with the RD application, and not your GPA from the end of your junior year. There are risks, of course — you will want to know how much of the entering freshman class is admitted EA (at least the in-state part), and whether you might get shut out if you wait to apply RD; there is the possibility that your GPA might actually go down after Fall Semester; etc., etc. But it is worth a serious discussion with your guidance counselor; and since the EA deadline is October 15, then try to have this conversation sooner rather than later.
@gandalf78 : Thank you for your feedback. I will definitely meet with my counselor as soon as school opens. Any idea what kind of grade is shown on Naviance scattergram: senior year (full) grade or just junior year grade? If scattergram is showing complete final year grade then I might me comparing my junior year grade with others final grade.
@Cam367: You are likely comparing your current grade (after junior year) with the final grades (after senior year) from students who have already been accepted; and those final, senior-year GPAs which are now showing on Naviance may be different from the GPAs that the accepted/rejected/waitlisted students had at the time they originally applied.
@VANDEMORY1342 : Acceptance rate for Georgia students was 49% in EA last year. So I am thinking to apply in EA. Though I will check with my school counselor about it.
