Chances for Me?

White in-state female from Hampton Roads (<30 miles away. It’s a cool place! When I was small I took a couple of summer classes there. And I mean elementary school. You could say I met my love of words there!)

GPA: 4.0 UW, 4.52 W. Have never gotten a B on a report card.
Rank: 2/377 (shared w/Asian/Caucasian accepted to MIT a day or so ago!)
SAT I composite: 800 CR/780 M/800 W (12 pt. essay)
SAT IIs: French Reading, Biology E, Eng. Lit–will get Dec. 19; I want at least 650, 750, 750 (Lord please…)
APs: self-studied U.S. Gov (10), self-studied, Eng. Lang (11), other than that Comp. Gov and Psychology (10), Calc B/C w/AB subscore and U.S. History (11). All 5s.

Full IB schedule this year (as well as last year when French was still IB–they don’t offer HL): HLs math, biology, English, history. SL Social Anthro this year. 1 sem Theory of Knowledge (weighted IB course), 1 sem Creative Writing (4.0 course only, but I love it…it’s not for the “easy A.”)

IB scores for junior year: 7 SL French, 5 SL Art Option B (workbook). Yuck.

Essays: Not written yet but I expect they’ll be at least middling if I don’t stress.
Teacher rec: Awesome. English teacher loves me and writes WELL!
Counselor rec: Don’t know.
Hooks: Dad got his MBA there just after I was born, so I’m a legacy.

ECs: I now believe I put in way too many. Things I should have put in and been more selective:

museum volunteer (“planting”) 11-12

Relay for Life (did not note mother had cancer here, on the grounds it might look like a sympathy thing) 9-12

People to People Student Ambassador (summer 10)

Trifecta of Honor Societies: French (12), Math (11-12, now VP), Nat’l (11-12)

play classical piano

Yearbook assistant editor (12)

Student Government (sec 10, rep 11 [wasn’t elected–:-(], sec 12)

I wish there were some way they could see your participation in activities and your confidence rise the same way they could see GPA rise on the transcript.

Awards: (being selective here now)

1st place regional science fair (10)

Stockholm Jr. Water Prize Central VA region state science fair (10)

AP Scholar w/Distinction (in 11)

Nat’l Merit Semi-finalist (hope to be finalist)–12 technically

Outstanding Social Studies Student (Grades 9 and 11)

Apparently I also have the highest…composite ranking (rank + ECs???) of anyone in my school…but there have been quite a few people applying from my school. Senior class president (also MUN president who’s won several awards) was accepted ED. So was a legacy. Another was deferred. My friend who’s #5 is applying too, and for a scholarship. I’m also applying to UVA…

Am I right in thinking this is an OK choice for a backup? Or should I be more worried? What say you?

I think you should be applying to Harvard.

lol me too--if you're not worthy of william and mary, ppl like me are not worthy of community college.

Oh, you are DEFINITELY in!

I disagree with you applying to Harvard, unless of course it is the school where you want to attend. No one should apply to a school just because they meet the standards. Apply to a school that meets your needs and where you would be most happy.

As long as you don't advocate cannibalism or something in your essays, then you are definitely IN.

Heh, cannibalism...reminds me of the one terrible spelling error I heard about while attending an info session..."I love to 'torture' children..." (It was supposed to be 'tutor'...)

Harvard would be a stretch but I will apply to an Ivy in the hopes that the divine fates (or something like them) smile upon me. That would be far more difficult to say. Even if I did get in, though, $ is a factor there, and W&M and UVA are two great in-state schools! Sometimes I think my parents moved there just for that.

i'd say you're good for uva too. no worries!

But you should definately choose W&M over UVA, should you get into both!

oh yes! totally agree--w&m has so much more class.

you have a very good chance

OK, new stats on SAT IIs:

French: 650 (Yuck! Icky! Stupid 6!)
Biology E: 770
Eng. Lit: 800! Yay!

This can only help you. Good luck.
