Here are her stats:
she is finishing junior year
GPA 3.8 (uw) 4.2 (w)
class rank top 10%
SAT 1760 cr 590 m 550 wr 620 (retaking in June)
several AP classes (English, Biology, US History)
taking AP exams for Biology and History this year
Completing Spanish IV and will be taking Spanish in CC next year
as HS does not offer higher level.

ECs include vice president of Gay Straight Alliance club
2 yrs as Sgt. in Law Enforcement Explorers-through Explorers
there are several community service
hours (Cops for Kids, help with MS walk-a-thon, etc.)
She works 20 hrs a week to save for college.

She will have an excellent recommendation from a senior
criminal investigator for the state District Attorney's Office
(he is program lead for Explorers).
Recommendation from her AP science teacher.

She wants to major in criminology and Florida State has a nice
program. Her long term goals are to become an F.B.I. agent.

I realize her SAT is bad. Not sure why she is having problem
as I know she can do better, but I don't have hope she will get above
low 600s in each section. I think it is test anxiety.

Will the fact that she has a definate major with a strong background
in it help her? Should we contact someone in the criminology
department and talk to them about her chances and let them know
of her interest in FSU? We do not reside in Florida.

Other choices include:
U of Central Florida
Missouri State U in Springfield
U of Missouri St. Louis
New Mexico State-extreme safety (state of residency)
George Mason-extreme reach
George Washington-extreme reach

What do you think. Any help or suggestions are appreciated.

I think she has a good shot. She's got great grades and is in the top 10%. SATs are of secondary importance since she's proven herself in the classroom. I'm not sure what FSU's weighting criteria is, but I bet SATs only count for 10-15%, so she should have no issues whatsoever.

she'll get into FSU

GPA looks very good, but the SAT's should be a little higher. I'm not sure how much emphasis FSU is putting into SAT scores lately, so it wouldn't hurt to raise the score to 1200. Overall, she has very good chance of getting in.

I wouldnt call Mason an extreme reach. GW is though.

Thank you for your responses. She feels a little better now and will work on improving her SAT scores.

I'm a Florida resident, and I think that she'll have a great chance at FSU and the less selective UCF. Hopefully she can raise her scores a little bit to have an even better chance at the universities she wants. She shows a strong passion, and I think that the colleges will appreciate and recognize that. Good luck to her!

Averages at Florida State: 3.73 UW GPA, SATs 580CR/584M/606W (1770 total)--15% OOS. You daughter matches the profile exactly--but the OOS status hurts just a little. Match to Slight Reach

Univ of Central Florida: 3.8 W GPA, SATs 589CR/597M/610W (1796 total)--but accepts very few (3%) from OOS. Still it is considered easier to get into than Florida State, so I'd say Match to Slight Reach also (OOS)

George Mason is a Safe Match, not an extreme reach. They have an average GPA of 3.32 with SATs around 1650.

George Washington is a Reach. (SATs around 1890)

Univ of Missouri (St. Louis)--Match (you do know that the main campus of the University of Missouri is at Columbus--and the other top campus is at Rolla, don't you?)

Southwest Missouri State University (this is the college in Springfield)--Safe Match

New Mexico State University--Safety (in-state)

Best of success to you and your daughter

FSU is tough to get into from OOS. If she was in state she would be in, I amp retty sure.

If she were in state I would definitely say in, but I don't know how tough it is to get in from OOS. Definitely think it's possible though.

Where are your numbers for FSU coming from calcruzer?

These numbers are coming from the Princeton Review or from USNW's college edition, but the numbers I'm using are from 2005 or 2006 admitees, since the stats on the people who were admitted this year are not yet available through Princeton Review or USNW. When the new numbers are out (which will be in late August), I'm sure Princeton Review and USNW will update them.

I've never seen UCF's numbers exceed FSU's. The CDS's of both schools confirm this.

I agree with parent2noles. I'm pretty sure that UCF's numbers do not exceed FSU's. I'm guessing that FSU's numbers are not current, and UCF's are.

Your daughter is 100% in!!!!!!!1

Here is the factbook from University of Central Florida:
http://www.iroffice.ucf.edu/factbooks/2006-2007/table12.pdf
It shows the average SAT of incoming freshmen at 1192 (592 V/602 Math)
(my numbers showed 1186)

Here is the factbook from Florida State University:
http://www.ir.fsu.edu/Factbooks/2006-07/Admission_Statistics.pdf
It shows the average SAT of incoming freshmen at 1167.5 in 2006.
(my numbers showed 1164)

As you can see, the numbers are higher at UCf than at FSU. Sorry that I was off by 6 points at UCF and 3 points at Florida State.

Okay, so I can't add today, nor post things correctly--it's 1201 at UCF (592 Verbal and 609 Math).
Both of these numbers are for the same year--Incoming class, year 2006-2007

I think the small discrepancy in the numbers from Princeton Review is because for these schools, I had 2005 numbers.

Let's compare apples to apples:

UCF's 2006-7 Common Data Set: http://www.iroffice.ucf.edu/commondataset/commondataset06/commondataset06.html

FSU's 2006-7 Common Data Set: http://www.ir.fsu.edu/Common_Data_Set/2006-07/C.html

As you can see, FSU has higher scores and a higher average SAT of 1206 (FSU) vs. 1201 (UCF) and a higher average GPA 3.62 (FSU) vs. 3.57 (UCF).

While UCF has made some gains in the past few years they have never exceeded FSU's FTIC stats in any credible record I can find. Note that the SAT averages come from the university webpages since they're not given in the CDS.

No, I don't see--neither one of these documents gives the average SAT scores for the school.

It lists the 25% level and the 75% level and no average--I have absolutely no idea where you are getting your numbers from.

Here's what it says on your link above for FSU.

So tell me where in all those numbers it lists the average SAT scores? It doesn't. And don't tell me you averaged the numbers between the 25% level and the 75% level, because if you did, you would get an average score this way for FSU of 1160. (The 25% level for verbal is 530, the 75% level for verbal is 620, the 25% for math is 540, the 75% level for math is 630).
Note that these numbers support the other website, which list their actual average of 1167.

Thanks for posting data that supports my argument.

P.S. One last thing--as a note of reconciliation here--I'm agreeing with parent2noles on the GPA thing.

If you'll note my first post, I said the grades were 3.73 Unweighted at FSU, and 3.8 Weighted at UCF. Since there is usually a .3 difference between UW and W scores, a 3.8 Weighted at UCF would correspond to about a 3.5 UW. Thus, I was always in agreement that the GPA is higher for students being admitted to FSU than those being admitted to UCF.

DPalmer, please excuse me for getting off on a tangent from your original question and pointing this thread in a different direction. Hopefully future posters will get back to your question, which is what the chances are for your daughter at the various schools.
