Would like to know his chances at Stanford, Berkeley, Carnegie Mellon, Georgia Tech, UI Urbana Champagne, Purdue, UT Austin, Duke (BioMed)
Does he have any chance at Ivies?

One thing to consider is if you can pay the $50K+ for out of state public colleges. For instance UC Berkeley is $55K. I think your S is competitive for all of them but scope your list wisely. The Ivies are great with need based aid but offer no merit aid. Highly competitive schools like you list, if they offer any merit aid, are extremely competitive for that money.

Extra Curriculars are not even close to ivy level but being ranked one in the entire class is huge. Georgetown is another school to consider. They pride themselves with the amount of High School valedictorians that attend there. I think they have a very good shot at all the schools listed except for maybe duke, berkeley, and Stanford. Those are all reach schools but definitely possible.

You know what scratch that, I think your student has a solid chance at all of those schools

Thank you Erin’s Dad and Diplomill.

How does Merit Aid (When offered) work? Are they granted for all 4 years or do you reapply each year?

Also, would improving either of the standardized test scores help his Merit Aid chances?

Thanks again.

It’s good that you are doing your research. The first basic thing that you need to know is that Ivies and top schools like Stanford and CMU do not offer any merits scholarships, only need based Financial Aid (use the NPC… Net Price Calculators on college websites for an initial idea if you’d qualify.)

Stats wise he is solid. EC’s need a lot of work. He needs to prove his dedication in his extra activities.

thank you colorado_mom, bobomonki.
