thanks in advance!

So far, so good.

What are your standarized test results?

what do you mean by standardized tests?

sorry, I didn't notice your 32 ACT score. Good job!

You appear to be sufficiently qualified but keep in mind, NU's admissions process can sometimes be characterized as "unpredictable" and a bit quirky. But in good way. They seem to view the applicants in a more holistic way by still considering a prospective students academic achievements as well as other less easily qualifiable attributes like leadership skills, goal focus, etc.

BTW, son will be attending NU and though he's achieved much academically, was able to express his other personal qualities through his essays, recommondations and follow-up letters. Regardless of what you may hear, I strongly believe these personal touches go a long way in convincing a school you're a serious applicant. Don't be shy about sharing your feelings with the admissions committee

i'm going to visit Boston and Northeastern next week (coming from Chicago) and from what i hear they like it if you show interest. so i have a meeting scheduled with a music industry professor and hopefully that will show my interest.

any other info about my chances is greatly welcomed!

of course, what school DOESN'T want you to show interest haha...

I think taking the step to actually SEE the school is a big plus becase many people apply to NU thinking it's a safety without ever seeing it. i guess if you are at an info session with the admissions rep, i would ask questions about coop, boston, your major, stuff like that--anything that would make you stand out. good luck, hope you like boston!

didn't want it to come to this but...

bump!

There's really not much of a question in terms of admission. You're going to get into Neu. Northeastern hasn't improved so much that they can reject 3.64 GPA 32 ACT applicants. The only real question is how much merit aid, and that one is hard. I would suggest applying early action as that will increase your chances at getting some money. If I had to guess, I would say 16K or something like that but it's really hard to guess how much money Neu will give you.

yeah assuming/hoping i can get into NEU, it will all come down to money whether i end up attending or not. i think 16k like you nope89 said might just do the trick in convincing my parents to cough up all that dough. i really have my heart set on NEU, and dont want to be let down if i dont end up going there.

thanks for the reply, nope89!

Hey there..

I applied to NU this year as a safety and got in.. I was offerd $10,000 per year merit scholarship. My ACT score was 30 and my GPA unweighted was 3.8 with good extra curriculars. I'm sure you'll get in.. Good luck!

jai6638, would you be willing to send me youre application essay by any chance? :)

i really just want to take a look at a couple, before i write mine. i will steal the essays or any ideas from it, i just want an example of what theyre expecting, so to speak.

really, this message is for anyone that got accepted to NU, not just jai.

"i will steal the essays or any ideas from it"

LOL, I think you're missing a "not"

oh wow.

CORRECTION: i will NOT steal your essays or any ideas from it!

sorry about that.

so anyone willing to share?

essays anyone?

please!?

I'm not sure why everyone stresses so much about the essay... Yes, it has to be good, but they're mostly looking to see that you can put thoughts together using proper English (and from what I've seen of some college students, EEK!). Sure it helps to also write about something that's unique and demonstrates desirable qualities, but it's mostly the effort put into making it the best piece of writing you are capable of that counts. For this reason, I'm not sure how reading other essays can help (other than perhaps ideas, but again, yours needs to be about YOU). Also, remember that your application is viewed as a whole. If you have a super GPA, super SATs, a stellar essay, and minimal extra curriculars, certain schools will toss you in the round file straight away. On the other hand, if you have an average GPA, pretty good SATs, a well written but not masterpiece of an essay, and incredible extra curriculars, you might get by in that same school. It's all about the package deal.

two things:

jenllip, yeah youre probably right about stressing too much about the essays. i am a pretty good writer and if i pick a good topic i think i'll be fine. thanks for helping me see that.

jenllip, you said "if you have a super GPA, super SATs, a stellar essay, and minimal extra curriculars, certain schools will toss you in the round file straight away" what does "toss you in the round file straight away" mean? is it good or bad?

PS: i'm also starting to realize how these chance threads really don't mean very much, it all comes down to what the admissions officer think of you, but i would still sppreciate any more opinions on my possible acceptance. thanks!

round file = garbage can

i see...

is NU one of those "certain schools" that will toss my file into the garbage can if i have minimal extracurriculur activities? i would say that is my weakest area currently.

I'm not an admissions officer, so I really don't know what NEU looks for specifically. In general, however, you just have to make the assets you DO have stand out. It may actually make you look bad if you suddenly join four clubs and do community service in your senior year having never done it before.

Just be yourself. My motto has always been that if a place doesn't want me for who I am, then that isn't a place I want to be. Just trust that you'll end up in the right fit for you.

thanks for all the info/advice, jen!
