Really want to go to Syracuse, do I have any chance at Newhouse?

Hi guys,
I used to be a huge slacker. I didn't do homework , never studied for tests, did nothing after school...It was a disaster. Then about halfway through my sophomore year I realized that what I was doing was going to hurt me in the long run. From that point on I never recieved below a B. However, the damage had alraedy done,as my freshman year GPA was pretty low and my sophomore year GPA was just ok. Junior year I had a huge improvement and really did as well as I know I can. This year I'm doing well so far as well.

For Cuse, I really want to get into Newhouse, but not sure if I really have any chance. I'd like to apply to whichever major I would have the best chance at getting accepted in; I'm interested in Newhouse for Film/Radio/TV, and also in the School of Management and in the Sports Management Program.
Which would I have the best shot at , and what should I apply for so that I would definetely get in?

So here are my stats, and tell me if i'm going to get in or not make it to the colleges on my list

Freshman year: 2.78 GPA
Sophomore Year: 3.14 GPA (Honors English)
Junior Year: 3.72 GPA (AP Gov, Honors English, History, Business classes.)

Cumulative GPA: 3.23

School doesn't rank.

I go to a top 10 school in NJ, and we typically do very well at most colleges (Northern Highlands)

took SATs a few times:
SAT 2 section single score: 1230
SAT 2 Section Superscore: 1250
SAT 3 Section single score: 1910
SAT 3 secion super score: 1930

So can I overcome my bad freshman year with my huge upward trend?

i dont’ know about syracuse’s school of management since i’m also only a high schooler but you’re far from a shoo-in at newhouse.

I know, thats why I was asking if I had any chance at all.

You can list up to 3 schools on your SU application (and sometimes the school offers you a completely different one). Newhouse is a long shot, Whitman is a possibility since you are doing much better in the upper grades, and the sports management program is in the human ecology school and is much easier to get into. You should request an interview right away - if they are still available. You might try at Lubin House in NYC. With an interview, you can explain your situation. Once you get into SU, you could try to transfer - it is based totally on GPA in your freshman year.

So does Syracuse admit you based on major: for example if I apply to Newhouse as my first choice, could I get rejected from newhouse but still accepted to the school?

SU has 8 different schools and you choose three schools to apply to in your application. The schools differ drastically in their requirements, reputation, and rigor. You are accepted to a particular school. If you are undecided, you would be accepted into the College of Arts and Sciences. After your freshman year, you can apply to transfer from one school at SU to another. It is very difficult to transfer into Newhouse and Whitman and it is based totally on your GPA freshman year. So you could be accepted into one school, and rejected by Newhouse.
In terms of specific major within each school, I am only familiar with Newhouse and Whitman. They do not seem to care what major you are interested in on your college application - my daughter changed her Newhouse major her first semester and she still hasn’t picked a Whitman major as a sophomore.

Greetings original poster: Yes, if you are rejected from Newhouse, you will be accepted into your second or third school, if you qualify for acceptance there!

Anyways, allow me some offhand advice. For, I am all too familiar with having made stupid mistakes that might compromise my future.

I am actually about a decade older than you, and most typical college students. I am someone who somewhere further back down the line took an enourmously wrong turn. That is a long story, and is neither here nor there. The point is I my high school history is atrocious and humiliating and sporadic.

When I was 25 1/2 years old, it suddenly hit me like a ton of bricks that I needed to get my act together. At that point, Newhouse hadn’t even occurred to me yet, but there was still no way, I was going to get into ANY decent school anywhere.

So, what I did I do? I went to community college, and I stretched my time out over 3 years, and I worked my tail off for my associates degree, all the while befriending teachers, becoming an honor student, joining Phi-Theta-Kappa, and never earning a single grade less than A-, and in the end I graduated Summa Cum Laude.

Now, with the support of one a beloved English Professor I leaped off of a cliff and applied to Newhouse. Even to this day, I have no clue how I was able to pull it off, but I was accepted and i’m in the middle of finishing up my first semester there area transfer student. (I am quite literally in the midst of finishing up a third of a Capstone project for the News Writing class)

My advice to you: If you REALLY are set on Newhouse, and more so than any other school, then consider waiting to see if they reject you first. If they do then on hold off on applying elsewhere, and opt to go to Community College instead. You can devote your time to your studies there, and maybe come out with a much better record and a shinier transcript to show. The best part is, if you are coming to them from College, they won’t look at your high school grades, or any of your test scores.

Good Luck!

Put A&S as your second choice. If you get in to A&S, don’t take hard classes. Ace the classes you do take. Apply as an internal transfer. It’s much easier. Applying ED helps.
