chances for non-ivy but competitive schools

Go to a very competitive h.s. in ny
GPA- 4.41w (don't know unweighted)
No class rank...i'm pretty sure it's within the top 10% or less
Sats: 1970 680v, 580 math :( and 710w
-I'm going to take them again and i'm aiming for a 2100
SatIIs: 680 bio, 590 math, I'm taking the us history next week (hoping to get around the 700s range)
I take the most challenging course load possible for all 3 years (i'm a junior) and my senior schedule is:
Ap spanish, Ap english, Ap calc ab, Ap environmental, ap economics, italian, and ap gov

Ecs:
-prez of youth group
-editor/writer of a lit mag
-lots of community service
-few clubs
-varsity track
-played soccer for several years until 10th grade
-spanish immersion program over the summer
-camp counselor this summer

**I want to major in journalism/communications
-How do i look for these schools: Northwestern (my top choice), washu, emory, brandeis, nyu, boston university, and vanderbilt

Northwestern -- reach to huge reach (depending on how high your rank is...if you are in the top 1% it may be feasible)

WashU - Reach
Emory - Slight Reach/ Reach
Brandeis - Slight Reach
NYU - Slight Reach / Match
Boston U - Match
Vanderbilt - Slight Reach

PS Math is the easiest to improve...my friend had a score about yours on the PSAT & got 690 on the March SAT.

If you had a 2100...

Northwestern - slight reach
Wash U - slight reach
Brandeis - match
NYU - match
Boston U - Safe Match
Vanderbilt - Match

Unfortunately, test scores do matter. Something to remember is that a lot of colleges will not be taking the writing section too seriously. Not counting the writing, you have a 1260 math/reading, which makes your test scores below avg for just about all the schools on your list.

Also, Northwestern journalism is much more competitive than Northwestern in general. If you weren't looking at Medill, your chances would be considerably better.

One more thing...since you are looking to major in journalism, I would consider improving your reading equal to the improvement you should hope to make in math. Given your major, I think you would be accepted at most of the schools on your list if you were able to pull off a 720-750 Reading / 650-680 Math score, which I think is doable.

If you get your SAT's up to 2100, you'll be in GREAT shape.

You have a very high GPA with a tough courseload. I'd say NW and WashU will be the only ones you'll have trouble with.

You're definately into BU.
