I've taken the hardest course load my school offers. I've take 2 APs so far, but my school doesn't let freshmen or sophomores take APs. I've signed up for 5 APs next year. Everything else has been honors. This year's scores--Psychology=3 and US History=4.

Extracurriculars/Volunteering: Volunteer at the Manna House (local soup kitchen) (40+ hours), Natural Resource Conservation Service Volunteer (10 hours), Environmental Discovery Center Volunteer (10 hours), Helped start a relief fund for the Chinese Earthquake victims through recycling.

Clubs/leadership/Honors/Awards/Employment: National Honor Society (VP), Beta Club (Treasurer), Leo Club (Secretary-Treasurer), French Club (President), Tennis Club (Member), Yearbook (Co-Editor), Palmetto Boys State, Academic Letterman for 3 years, American Eagle Outfiiters sales associate for over one year.

I want to double major in psychology and journalism. As far as the SATs go, I know they're pretty low. I am going to hit the books pretty hard and retake them in October and the subject tests in November. I plan on taking the ACT in September and see how I do on that. I'm from South Carolina so I'm hoping that my geographic position will play into my advantage especially because fewer than 20 students from SC currently attend NYU. I also really want to nail the essays. My recommendations should be pretty good too. We shall see.

Also, any thoughts on applying on paper versus applying online? Applying online makes me a little nervous for some reason.

Unfortunately, NYU does not (supposedly) take the SAT "writing" grade into consideration, which is too bad for you cause it seems an asset. Your'e a good 130 points below CAs average-ish SAT, but I had a lot of friends who did WAY better on the ACT, and I myself (in a mistaken effort to increase my weak math scores) picked up an extra 110 points in one sitting (mostly on the reading. Your Grades, rigor of course work and location are all a big boost. Are you applying ED? ...another huge boost if you are...a lot a kids with similar stats got into the "General Studies Program" what would you do if they offered you that? You have a fightin chance, focus on those test scores though

well...here's my two cents. regarding the SAT writing, the reason that section didn't 'count' for the first few yrs was b/c colleges didn't hv enough statistical data to draw accurate comparisions b/t writing scores and "intelligence"...now with more and more data, colleges all around are starting to place more and more emphasis...but still, i hv to say that ur scores are a bit weak. u rly need a 1300+ to hv a good shot. if u can maybe try to get that math lvl2 to a 600+. ur GPA seems solid. applying ED would help greatly as well. good luck

I think you have a great shot ED or RD because, like you said, your from South Carolina, and you've got a lot of leadership positions going on there. If you can boost your SATs a couple hundred points I'd give you a 90% shot at getting into CAS.

To answer your question, I do want to apply early decision. The only problem is that my dad isn't too keen on the $52,000 tuition & I'm not sure about qualifiying for need-based financial aid and I hear merit-based is rather bleek. But, I still might be able to apply early. If it were completely up to me, I definitely would. Those standardized tests just kill me, though. I just bought a book on the ACT and I am going to do my best to do better on that. I really hope that the admissions process will include my writing scores, because that's my strong point.

As far as that General Studies program, I am a tad apprehensive. But if I am offered it, then I guess I will have no control over it, especially if I am going to do ED.
