Chances for NYU, Fordham, Barnard, Brown, & others

Hi, so I'm a Junior as of the 2010-2011 school year. I’m female and Caucasian. I’ll be a first generation college student. I come from a lower-middle class family. I'm going to be applying for financial aid.

Colleges:
Fordham University (my first choice.. should I apply Early Action? .. its non binding)
New York University (NYU)
Brown University
Barnard College (with Columbia)
Macaulay Honors College (City University of New York Honors College)
St. John’s University (in N.Y.)
Iona College
Pace University (as a safety, Honors program)

I might consider applying to Cornell, Dartmouth, and Yale (I would apply to Columbia but I’m applying to Barnard and I was told not to apply to both) if my SAT scores are close to 2100 or higher.

I attend Midwood High School in Brooklyn (you can search it on Google). It's arguably the best (at least one of the best) public high school in Brooklyn/New York City after the Specialized High Schools (such as Brooklyn Tech and Stuyvesant).

Rank: Top 5% of my class.. possibly higher (don't know exactly my rank yet)

GPA: 95-96/100 unweighted, 96-97/100 weighted (I converted it from the scale)
Nice upward trend beginning in Freshmen year. My first semester Junior year final grades were amazing (GPA: 101/103 W or 98/100 UW)

APs: Junior Year- AP United States History, AP Psychology
Senior Year- AP English, AP Government, AP Micro-Economics (and maybe AP Statistics)

Honors:
Honors Geometry, Honors Integrated Algebra 2/Trigonometry
Honors English 1/2, Honors English 3/4, Honors Creative Writing
Honors Chemistry, Honors Living Environment (Biology)
Honors Latin 1/2
Honors Global History & Geography 1/2, Honors Global History & Geography 3/4

Academic Record:
Foreign Language- 5 years
Math- 4 years (possibly 5)
English- 5 years
Science- 4 years
History/Social Studies- 7 years
Art/Music- 1 year (requirement of one semester of each)

Almost all of my classes were Honors since Freshmen year (with the exception of high school classes I took in 8th grade which I got credit for and electives which were apart of a special program I'm in).
My school only offers (with a few rare exceptions) APs to Juniors and Seniors. There's also a limit of three APs for Juniors, and four/five APs for Seniors. I'm also only allowed to take seven classes per term, including gym (so six academic classes).

SAT: 1970 (took in December)
660 in Critical Reading
620 in Math
690 in Writing
I’m going to take the SAT two more times and plan to get a 2100 or something very close to it.

I’m going to take the SAT Subject Tests in World History, American History, and maybe English Literature.

Extra-Curricular Activities: (I’m going to group them according to my interests)

My Creative Writing Teacher has entered me into a number of writing contests, so hopefully I’ll win some. The English Department at my school says I'm "extremely talented".

I want to major in Political Science with a double minor in Psychology and Creative Writing. I’m considering going to Law School.

And are they any other colleges you suggest? I prefer private and/or Catholic colleges over public ones, but I’ll look at anything. And I would also like to stay within New York City or the surrounding suburbs.

Also, how much financial/merit aid do you think I'll receive from these schools?

Wow. I’m extremely impressed by your transcript. You’re a very strong applicant. Your SAT is a tad low when compared to the rest of your credentials, but it should barely matter in the context of your application.

I’d say you’re pretty safely in all of those except for NYU, Brown, and Barnard. NYU should still be no problem to get into, but it would be very difficult to get financial aid. Brown is a reach school, because your SATs are disappointing for an Ivy. The same goes for Barnard. I would still say it’s quite possible for you to get into both, though.

Return the favor? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1076697-chance-me-please.html

Thanks. Actually, MY SAT score is in the Middle 50% for Barnard (except I think my math maybe, that needs to go up a couple of points.) To get into Barnard is a actually a little easier than actual Columbia (it’s kinda weird, I know.) But I’m definitely going to take the SAT again and if I actually study with some effort this time, I should hopefully get a 2100 or something close to it. But thank you! =]

Hey thanks for chancing!
I see now that you are in brooklyn, I am in westchester.
I think you definitely have good chances at all of those schools. Everything is really great, GPA, ECs, etc. If you can get your SAT up to around a 2100 that would help you out a lot I think. Best Of luck to you!
(Ps It wouldn’t be a bad thing to apply early action to fordham)

WOW! I’m speechless. This transcript is amazing! You show dedication in all aspects of the school but you obvs. are an amazing, talented writer! Your GPA is outstanding and I wish I had as many awards as you. If you don’t get into whatever school you apply to, I don’t know who will! Personally, I could see you at Brown though:)

Definitely apply EA to Fordham.

And if you are able to apply/attend their pre-college summer session for one course this summer, it would not hurt at all. You’ll get credit and establish personal connections. The application process should start in February for those courses. Best of all, it forces you to get into writing your essays and getting letters of recommendations 6-8 months before the rest of the class. Good luck!

Wow very solid transcript! You have great EC’s and test scores are solid. Look to raise them up a bit but otherwise you should be able to easily meet your goals and you are competitive for any of those schools! Good Luck!

hey OP i’m extremely curious about your writing pursuits, if you could answer me i’d appreciate it enormously.
what kinds of writing contests have you entered? i’m a good writer too but having trouble looking for contests to enter.
what sort of history magazine is the one you mentioned? a local club?
thanks so much!
