I've got about a 3.7 average (91.5) unweighted, (and 105 weighted) and a 1950 SAT so far (I'm retaking them in about a month).
My english teacher is grading (and correcting for grammar) my class's application essays and she's extremely picky, but well-read so hopefully the essay will be decent.
I'm in the hardest classes possible for my HS (All level 1's and 5 APs by the end of HS).
I'm in the top 10% of my graduating class and have recieved highest honors (above 100 weighted average) throughout every term of my HS career.
The teacher's I'm getting recommendations from are my very kind junior year english teacher, and my video production teacher who i've had for four years (he's a good guy, i'm one of his favorite students).
I've had a job for over a year now which i work at 9 hours a week, and by the time i graduate it will be with recognition in video production (100 hours of video related community service).
I've done track for two years (both indoor and outdoor)(fresh and soph), debate club for two (junior and senior), I started up a film club in my school my senior year (this year),I was elected the public relations officer for student council my senior year (I've done student council junior and senior years).
I created a PSA for a DMV video competition and I received finalist status as well as a scholastic gold key for that video. A news video on the FBI cyber crime unit I created was also selected for air on the FOX student news.
My portfolio is about half done; it's coming out pretty well but we'll see...

I'm not entirely sure if I left out anything. Sorry about the long-winded-ness. Any input is much appreciated

I think you should apply ED. Your stuff sounds really good. If you’ve visited and it’s your toppy top choice just do it!

unfortunately chancing for Tisch is nearly impossible because we can’t see your portfolio. However, academically I’d say you’re a competitive applicant, the GPA should be fine but I’d try to get the SAT up above 2000 (what is the break down? I’d imagine Tisch looks more closely at CR and W than M but that’s just a guess). Overall if you’re portfolio matches your academics then I think you stand a pretty good chance especially with the early decision boost, of course nothing is guaranteed with NYU admissions, I’ve heard of very qualified applicants being rejected.

thanks…I’m also applying to USC, UCLA, BU, Columbia, and Fordham (not for film). do I stand a chance at these places? should I maybe apply to anywhere else?

You do know that you don’t get admitted directly to UCLA’s film program, right? You apply to begin the film program at UCLA in your junior year. That was one big reason I chose not to apply there for film. Also, film at Columbia is a graduate program, not undergraduate.

I don’t have the stats to back me up right now, but my gut feeling is with those stats and a good portfolio, you’ll be in at Tisch, BU and Fordham, and you need a higher SAT for the other three. (I mention SATs specifically because I don’t see how you could change any of the other things at this point.)

Ohh i thought that was the case but I wasn’t entirely sure…and thanks I hope you’re right because Tisch is my absolute top. I’m gonna “up” my SATs for sure. Also, does anyone have any other suggestions as to where else I should apply or anything I should/can do to up my chances?

Yea I know a few people who go there, and there grades were horrid however they were a god when it came to film. Keep your portfolio of movies as strong as your academic record you should do well.

One more thing - I didn’t see you mention SAT IIs, and if you’re applying to USC SCA, NYU Tisch and Fordham, I don’t believe you need them. However, for BU College of Communication and Columbia College, you will need two SAT Subject Tests (the reason I didn’t apply to BU… talk about lazy).

I should also clarify: Columbia offers film studies as an undergrad major, but the film production program at Columbia is an MFA.

yeah I took the SAT subject tests…i didn’t do amazing on them (not that i did bad either) but I think that I’d be fine for BU as long as my other credentials and SAT 1s make up for it. I also feel like I need a few more schools for film…does anyone have any suggestions that might be a good match (as opposed to a safety or reach)?

If you are interested in film you might consider: American University School of Communication, University of Texas at Austin, University of Central Florida, Florida State, Emmerson, UNC school of the ARts and Chapman. All have good or great film programs. Some are harder to get into than others, but with film, sometimes the portfolio is more important than the grades.
