Chances for OOS

My daughter (a jr) wants to go to USC. She has a 3.994 unweighted and a 4.25 weighted. She has a 1230 SAT (old score - verbal 660, math 570) and will take it again soon. She has taken (or is presently taking or plans to take) the following AP's - Euro (4), AP Engl 11, APUSH, AP Engl 12, AP Gov, AP Art and possible AP French language. She attends a very competitive high school in Fairfax Northern Va.

I've heard that a 1250 SAT score makes you eligible for Instate Tuition rates. Is that true? What things does she need to do now to get the instate rate?

Thanks for any suggestions!

getting the instate tuition rate is dependent on being awarded certain scholarships from USC.If you look at the admissions website, you should be able to pull up a page with the stats of previous winners/honors college admits. Its not based soley on the SAT score.Be aware admissions has become more competitive, app #'s are up so the admit class for Fall 2009 may have higher stats than what you'll see listed.
If your D can get her SAT up to match her grades she'll be a slam dunk. The matrix you'll see with grades in her range will show a higher SAT. Check out the Honors College pages too. USC is quite generous with giving AP credit as well.

Cathymee, are application numbers up for 2009? Considering the recession, I was curious about that.

as far as I heard, numbers are up for all public U's as people are reconsidering the educational value they represent.

Pardon my ignorance, but how do people down South add up the SAT? Do they ignore one section? Also, is the ACT less popular to submit to USC?

stuckinillinois,

In Northern VA we add up only the math and verbal of the SAT for the most part since most universities in VA don't factor in the written part of the SAT still. And, judging by USC's scholarships requirements, they don't either. Most of the descriptions for their scholarships stated that SAT requirements were over 1250 or 1300 depending on the scholarship. So I am assuming that is math and verbal..........

Thanks Cathymee for the info. Now to work on that math part of the SAT. Is it possible to improve 40 points on that between now and May? :)

its not "people down south" its what each school uses as its requirement.USC uses the two scores and while it doesnt use the writing as a "score" the section is reviewed.I think most colleges are still using it in this fashion since its been added.

did your D do any structured review class or any tutoring sessions? sometimes its not just knowing your math, etc but knowing how to take the test and knowing from review what your weaker sections are can be a great help. I'd hate to see your D with her stellar grades,AP's ,etc miss out on any opportunity due to a few points (that is, for any opportunity where a simple matrix of grades/scores was used and might knock her out of contention).

I'm also in IL and my D is a sophmore at USC. The ACT is more common in the midwest. My D submitted only her ACT score to USC. Use whichever score is higher.
