My brother has an interest in the business school at BU. He is currently a junior in high school and I’m just wondering what your thoughts are on his chances and what he could do over the next 2 years to improve them.
white male from a $500,000+ income bracket
currently ranks 9/215 in his class
GPA is a 4.38/5
took AP US history as a sophomore and got a 4
Junior year schedule is honors english, honors prelcalc, AP psych, AP bio, spanish 4 honors and marketing ( we have limited APs at our high school and it is really not possible to take more than 3 a year due to block scheduling)
scored a 183 on PSATs as sophomore (will take SATs in fall)
scored a 680 on the history subject test
2 sport athlete
volunteered to keep score at children’s basketball games
member of business club
he got invited to apply for NHS and is doing so currently
any advice is appreciated
Just based on what you posted, I’d say he’s a strong candidate to get into BU. His GPA/rank is excellent, and my guess is that PSAT score will track him for a pretty solid SAT score. Assuming he can write an excellent essay and “Why BU” essay, I’d give him a fair shot at getting in.
So in terms of advice on how to strengthen his app: can he run for an officer/leadership position in the Business Club? Ditto NHS. Leadership is good, especially if he wants to go into business. I’m guessing the two sports take up a lot of time so he can’t do a ton of ECs, so I would maximize his time in the clubs he is in. Maybe add some more volunteering?
And what are his summers like? Maybe he could do something unique/interesting between junior and senior year. Summer marketing or business program? BU actually has some awesome looking summer programs: http://www.bu.edu/summer/high-school-programs/. Doing an actual BU program would give him an edge in applying (and make his “why BU” short answer easy to write!)
@proudterrier thank you for the advice! it’s much appreciated
